[Movie] Fire in the Eyes

  • Keywords: Action / Crime
  • Runtime: 113 min
  • Where to Watch: Now in theaters; Douban link

Small hammer, high damage. Big hammer, higher damage!

@SHY: In a Southeast Asian country, Wang Wei, a mute repairman, lives alone with his daughter Yuqing. Just as Yuqing is about to return home, she is abducted in broad daylight. After receiving little help from the police, Wang Wei follows every lead he can find and eventually teams up with Navin, a journalist searching for his missing wife. Together, they uncover the truth step by step and trace the trail back to the headquarters of a human trafficking syndicate. Behind a series of kidnappings lies an even larger criminal network.

Director Kenji Tanigaki, who comes from a martial arts choreography background, never relies on frantic editing to hide shortcomings. Instead, he makes clever use of each setting, crafting dazzling fight sequences through precise and fluid action design, while demonstrating masterful camera work throughout. Lead actor Tse Miu keeps things grounded by refusing stunt doubles and excessive visual effects, delivering real physical performances on camera. Every punch lands with weight and force, every confrontation feels brutal and uncompromising, and the visceral impact of flesh-and-blood combat sends adrenaline soaring. It’s the kind of movie that makes you afraid to blink.

From the opening truck chase to the nightclub brawls and the inventive multi-stage battles inside a high-rise building, relentless life-or-death combat runs through the entire film. The climactic many-versus-many showdown is especially spectacular. Even if the script leans on familiar genre conventions, the effortless excellence of the action sequences alone is enough to elevate it into must-watch territory. This exhilarating action film carries the fading glow of Hong Kong cinema’s golden era. At a time when kung fu movies are becoming increasingly rare, being able to experience such a high-energy martial arts spectacle on the big screen is a gift for audiences.

[Movie] Normandy: 72 Hours

  • Keywords: Drama / War
  • Also Known As: Pressure
  • Runtime: 100 min
  • Where to Watch: Now in theaters; Douban link

Storm Is Coming.

@SHY: On June 6, 1944, 150,000 Allied soldiers crossed the English Channel and launched the largest amphibious invasion in human history. What followed hardly needs retelling. From history textbooks to classic films, the Normandy landings have been documented countless times from every conceivable angle, making it seem as though no detail remains unexplored. Yet the British production team behind Darkest Hour found a lesser-known but crucial perspective.

The story begins before the originally planned June 5 invasion date. While American meteorologist Krick, trusted by General Eisenhower, predicted clear weather, British meteorologist James Stagg—brought in at the last minute—reached the opposite conclusion. With little authority and even less influence, Stagg must somehow convince Allied commanders within 72 hours. His final judgment will determine not only the fate of hundreds of thousands of troops, but potentially the course of the entire Second World War.

The original title, Pressure, carries multiple meanings. It refers not only to atmospheric pressure but also to the immense pressure weighing on Stagg, Eisenhower, and everyone involved in the decision-making process. There are no explosive battlefield assaults or close-quarters urban combat here, yet the strategic battles fought inside conference rooms are every bit as gripping. The suffocating atmosphere within Allied Supreme Headquarters becomes a battlefield of its own. Weather never repeats itself, but science allows us to predict it. This war film, which illuminates grand history through a small but pivotal story, deserves to be remembered.

[K-Drama] Iron Fist Education

  • Keywords: Drama / Action
  • Also Known As: 참교육
  • Runtime: Approximately 60 min per episode × 10 episodes
  • Where to Watch: Netflix; Douban link

This show feels like a teacher’s dying fantasy before finally being driven to death by students. (Not really.)

@潘誉晗: Two years ago, South Korea was shocked by the murder of a teacher at the hands of a student. In response, Education Minister Choi Kang-seok established a special department known as the “Educational Rights Bureau” to impose iron-fisted discipline on schools plagued by disorder. The bureau’s inspectors are granted extraordinary authority, with virtually no restrictions on how they enforce discipline. In other words, students who refuse to listen or follow the rules really do get hit.

Many teachers jokingly describe this adaptation of the webtoon True Education as the fantasy they might have right before being driven to death by unruly students: forget teaching credentials, just solve problems with your fists, and suddenly students become obedient and well-behaved. It sounds more like science fiction than reality. Yet the reason this cathartic drama quickly climbed to the top of Netflix viewing charts in 25 countries is not because of its brutality. Rather, through its “fight fire with fire” approach, the series directly confronts many of the deeply rooted problems facing modern education: excessive parental interference, school bullying, institutional neglect, and countless other issues that have no place in a healthy learning environment. These problems have steadily eroded trust in education itself. How to restore schools as places of meaningful learning is a question modern society can no longer afford to ignore.

[US Series] Star City

  • Keywords: Drama / Sci-Fi / War
  • Also Known As: Star City
  • Runtime: Approximately 50 min per episode × 8 episodes; Douban link

We are destined for the stars.

@潘誉晗: In the middle of the night, an urgent knock shatters the silence. A woman opens the door to find several armed soldiers standing before her, ordering her to come with them immediately. Knowing the nature of her husband’s work, she nervously breaks into tears, insisting that she is a good worker. Only after being escorted into a heavily guarded facility and meeting the chief spacecraft designer does she learn the truth: her husband has successfully landed on the Moon. The reason for the extraordinary secrecy surrounding her journey is simple—this is Star City, the Soviet Union’s space center.

While For All Mankind has only just reached its fifth season, its spin-off Star City arrives with remarkable sincerity. Unlike the parent series, which focuses on America’s exploration of outer space, Star City shifts its attention to the Soviet Union of the 1970s. Although the Soviets succeeded in reaching the Moon before the United States in this alternate history, they were also operating during an exceptionally sensitive period. The engineers and astronauts who dreamed of the stars had to endure not only the pressures of competing with America in the Space Race, but also the strict surveillance and constant suspicion of the KGB.

The grainy cinematography lends the story a strong sense of historical authenticity, while the political questions explored through the lens of space exploration leave viewers with much to ponder.

[Chinese Series] The Protagonist

A protagonist is forged through perseverance.

@潘誉晗: Yi Laidi was once a young shepherd girl from the mountains. Because her uncle Hu Sanyuan played drums in the county opera troupe, and because the troupe happened to be recruiting students, he enrolled his niece and brought her to the city to study Qinqiang Opera. He even changed her name to Yi Qing’e. But the path of mastering an art form was anything but easy. Later, after Hu Sanyuan was imprisoned following an accident during a performance, Qing’e lost the protection of her uncle and was reduced to working as a kitchen helper. Yet despite all of life’s hardships and setbacks, she ultimately rose through talent and determination to become the Queen of Qinqiang Opera.

For this adaptation of the Mao Dun Literature Prize-winning novel, acclaimed director Zhang Yimou serves as producer, while Faye Wong performs the theme song. Expectations were high, and the series does not disappoint. Qing’e’s journey reminds us that there are no “born protagonists.” She earned her place at the center of the stage through years of persistence, hardship, and growth. The series also serves as an introduction to Qinqiang Opera, revealing why this traditional art form is so moving. Born from the loess plateau of northwestern China, Qinqiang speaks with a raw and rugged voice that feels like life itself crying out.

[Japanese Drama] Midnight Taxi

  • Keywords: Drama
  • Also Known As: ミッドナイトタクシー
  • Runtime: Approximately 15 min per episode × 32 episodes; Douban link

A chance encounter that changes a life.

@利兹与青鸟: Midnight taxi driver Ran Shoko is just one month away from turning thirty. Perhaps there is something about the late-night hours that naturally invites unforgettable stories, because her passengers often find themselves reflecting on the night they met her. Shoko is both an observer and a listener. Though she usually maintains a calm, expressionless demeanor, she always knows when to offer a timely comment or small gesture that nudges the conversation forward, allowing each midnight story to unfold with unexpected twists and turns. The following morning, she visits her favorite coffee shop, enjoys a meal somehow connected to the previous night’s tale, exchanges a few philosophical thoughts with the owner, and gradually untangles some of life’s lingering uncertainties.

This latest late-night drama from NHK features episodes that run only fifteen minutes each, with every two or three episodes forming a self-contained story arc. Some are warm and humorous, others heartfelt and moving, but all carry a sense of fate and coincidence. Among the passengers are couples who confess their feelings through playing cards, two strangers with the same birthday who become “almost friends” after meeting in a restaurant, and a mother and son following an elderly roasted sweet potato vendor. Through these quirky yet endearing encounters, fragments of Shoko’s own past and identity slowly begin to emerge. By weaving multiple side stories alongside the main narrative, the series transforms a small taxi into a space where characters reveal themselves through conversation. The storytelling is simple, understated, and remarkably memorable.

[Japanese Drama] My Offsetting Diary

  • Keywords: Drama
  • Also Known As: わたしの相殺日記
  • Runtime: Approximately 25 min per episode (total episode count unknown); Douban link

Offsetting may be shameless, but it works?

@利兹与青鸟: Ate too many potato chips in the afternoon? Skip beer at dinner to offset the calories. Spent too much money on something unnecessary online? Walk instead of taking transportation tomorrow to offset the guilt. This is the “offsetting method” practiced by Sakuraba Moe. Inspired by the accounting concept of offsetting debts and credits of the same kind, she applies the idea to everyday life: if two things cancel each other out, it’s as if neither ever happened.

After working in accounting at a small company, Moe grew tired of the suffocating environment created by workplace bullying. She decides to pursue a freer lifestyle through part-time jobs and temporarily moves in with a friend, paying only one-tenth of the rent.

The series is written by Yoshihiro Taguchi, screenwriter of the Solitary Gourmet franchise. The very first episode features Moe enthusiastically devouring food in a park, enough to make viewers hungry themselves. While the “offsetting method” may not always make objective sense, psychologically it resonates strongly with the realities faced by many young people today. Life is already stressful enough. Rather than constantly fighting desires and reducing life’s small pleasures, why not enjoy the moment first and find a way to make up for it later? The editing and soundtrack complement each other perfectly, adding a playful charm to the series. That said, ano—who originally debuted as an idol—may have a performance style and speaking manner that won’t appeal to everyone. Overall, however, her slightly gloomy yet adorable energy fits the protagonist remarkably well. Here’s hoping the show continues its slice-of-life approach and doesn’t sacrifice too much in the name of freedom.

[Anime] Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You

  • Keywords: Manga Adaptation / Romance / Comedy
  • Also Known As: スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり / Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You
  • Runtime: Approximately 14 min per episode × 12 episodes (early streaming version) / Approximately 24 min per episode × total episode count unknown
  • Where to Watch: Crunchyroll; Douban link

Did you drop Yamada from the checkout counter, or Tayama from behind the store?

@SHY: Sasaki, a middle-aged office worker who routinely works late into the night, finds one of his few comforts in the smile of Yamada, a cashier at the supermarket he frequents after work. One evening, as usual, he stops by the store but fails to see Yamada. Just as he is about to light a cigarette to ease his disappointment, an employee named Tayama invites him to the smoking area behind the supermarket. Hitting it off immediately with Tayama, Sasaki suddenly gains a new place to unwind, completely unaware that she shares a rather unusual connection with Yamada.

Before the summer anime season has even officially begun, this smoky manga adaptation has already stolen the spotlight and gone viral on short-video platforms worldwide. The first six episodes, re-edited into shorter segments, are compact yet highly effective, capturing every subtle shift in the relationship between the two leads. The hazy atmosphere of romantic tension is deeply immersive, perfectly filling the emotional emptiness of modern urban life. The use of classic songs by Mayonaka and imase as the opening and ending themes feels especially fitting, while the full television version will feature newly commissioned songs that are likely to be even more captivating.

The understanding built during the span of a single cigarette gradually becomes a brief escape from reality—a small sanctuary that neither can replace. No dramatic twists are needed. They simply share their frustrations, venting about work and life while the smoke drifting from their fingertips carries away the burdens of everyday existence. If the hardships of adult life have made it difficult for you to relate to the innocence of high-school romances, this mature love story, filled with the quiet confidence of adulthood, may be exactly the remedy you need.

[Reality Show] Clarkson’s Farm Season 5

  • Keywords: Comedy / Documentary / Reality Show
  • Also Known As: Clarkson’s Farm Season 5
  • Runtime: Approximately 50 min per episode × 8 episodes; Douban link

The farmer with more ideas than anyone else.

@潘誉晗: Something completely unexpected happens on Clarkson’s farm—Jeremy Clarkson develops a heart condition. As a result, he spends some time in the hospital, undergoes surgery, and is repeatedly warned by doctors that he must not drive or perform farm work for a period of time afterward.

But this is Clarkson we’re talking about. Though no longer young, the famously outspoken presenter remains as stubbornly independent as ever. Not long after leaving the hospital, he returns to the farm. There, however, he quickly encounters another major problem: the British government has changed the taxation rules surrounding agricultural assets. Local farmers are protesting the decision and hoping Clarkson will step forward to support their cause.

As always, Clarkson’s Farm remains enormously entertaining. And Clarkson, the king of questionable yet brilliant ideas, continues to surprise everyone. Whether it’s organizing a bonfire celebration at the pub for the upcoming Christmas season, traveling to the Netherlands to study the latest agricultural technologies, or deciding to charter transportation for local farmers after worrying they might drive manure trucks to a protest, he never stops finding creative solutions. Even after a serious health scare, Clarkson’s swift return to the farm demonstrates something very clearly: his love for this land is entirely genuine.

[Reality Show] Friends Over Flowers: Limited Edition

  • Keywords: Reality Show / Travel
  • Also Known As: 꽃보다 청춘: 리미티드 에디션 / Friends Over Flowers: Limited Edition
  • Runtime: Approximately 90 min per episode × 6 episodes; Douban link

Traveling on a budget is still fun when you’re with friends who are on the same wavelength.

@潘誉晗: One day, producer Na Young-seok carefully orchestrates a clever trap. He invites actors Jung Yu-mi, Park Seo-jun, and Choi Woo-shik to his company under the pretense of discussing a new project. Then, during a live broadcast celebrating the twentieth work anniversary of a company employee, he uses the congratulatory event as an excuse to bring the three actors onto the set. Without warning, he announces that they are being “kidnapped” on the spot and must immediately set off on a week-long domestic trip, with a budget of only 100,000 won per person per day (roughly RMB 450).

The rules are simple: depart immediately, surrender all mobile phones, bring only whatever happens to be on hand that day, and absolutely no returning home to pack. Faced with a sudden journey they had no chance to prepare for, the three actors are completely caught off guard. Fortunately, their attitudes are remarkably positive. Once the trip is underway, there’s little point in complaining. They decide to embrace the experience and enjoy every moment of it.

Stripped of their celebrity status, the trio demonstrates what a travel reality show should really be about. No elaborate styling is required, and wearing the same clothes every day is perfectly fine. They navigate using traditional paper maps, purchase physical train tickets, and ask strangers for directions. In doing so, they rediscover the most essential purpose of travel—the simple joy of exploring the world and experiencing it firsthand.

[Chinese Series] Soul Ferry: Ten Years @潘誉晗:Ten years later, Xia Dongqing and Ya have opened a café called “444 Convenience Store.” One day, they encounter a man named Zhao Hengzhi who looks exactly like Zhao Li and claims to be a “Night Watcher.” A new adventure begins. While Soul Ferry: Ten Years reunites the original cast and tones down some of the darker elements, it introduces contemporary themes such as internet celebrities and otome games, giving the series a fresh edge. Beneath the supernatural mysteries and strange incidents, it still tells deeply moving stories about human emotions and connections.

[Germany] Murder Mindfully Season 2 @潘誉晗:Björn’s life appears to be getting better and better. He has established his own law firm and, after “dealing with” two mafia bosses, has even become the acting lawyer for two crime families. But when the childhood version of himself suddenly resurfaces from his subconscious, he realizes that mindfulness may not be enough to solve his growing anxiety. Season 2 of Murder Mindfully focuses on Björn’s efforts to heal his childhood trauma while weaving in a delightfully dark and humorous crime story filled with sharp wit and black comedy.

[Japanese Drama] The Dogs of Karma Season 2 @潘誉晗:As Kamo and Tora continue helping people seek revenge, they encounter a vigilante organization known as the “Breakfast Club.” Like the duo, the group targets criminals who have escaped legal punishment, but unlike Kamo and Tora, they believe victims’ families should personally carry out the retribution. The clash between these differing philosophies sparks compelling conflicts throughout the season. With its fast-paced narrative, the series not only resolves threads left from the first season but also lays the groundwork for future developments.

[K-Drama] Chairman Kang, the New Hire @潘誉晗:Athlete Hwang Jun-hyun loses his sports career after a devastating car accident. The crash was caused by the son and daughter of chaebol Kang Ryong-ho, but the blame is ultimately shifted onto Kang himself. When Kang Ryong-ho and Jun-hyun unexpectedly swap souls, Kang decides to infiltrate his own company by entering as an intern in Jun-hyun’s body. Adapted from a novel, the series skillfully combines body-swapping and revenge elements. Watching a determined father go head-to-head with his own children to protect his life’s work is hilarious, entertaining, and surprisingly satisfying.

[K-Drama] The Uncles Strike Back @利兹与青鸟:A decade ago, three legendary figures were recruited for a secret intelligence operation: Shadow, a South Korean agent; Fire Dog, a North Korean operative; and Beom-yong, a master of the underworld. Ten years later, they have all become ordinary middle-aged men living quiet lives. But when a key figure from the old case suddenly reappears, the three groups are brought together once again. Joined by the unconventional prosecutor Kang Young-ae, who is investigating the same case, they become entangled in a story that is equal parts dark and absurdly funny. With strong production values, an impressive cast, and a blend of mystery, action, and comedy, it makes for excellent casual viewing.

[Anime] Even My Replica Will Fall in Love @SHY:Xiao Zhi is a replica created to take the place of high school student Aikawa Sunao whenever the original doesn’t want to do something. This arrangement continues until Xiao Zhi unexpectedly falls in love at school. Experiencing emotions for the first time, she finally discovers something she genuinely wants for herself. Adapted from an award-winning light novel, the series uses its creative premise to tell a distinctive coming-of-age story. The psychological portrayal is particularly nuanced, and the narrative takes several unexpected turns. While the animation quality is somewhat limited, the atmosphere is more than adequate. If the premise interests you, it’s well worth a try.

[Anime] Among Us @SHY:A spaceship traveling through the galaxy is filled with carefree crew members looking forward to enjoying the journey. But when someone suddenly turns up dead, the crew must uncover the impostor hiding among them before more lives are lost. Released with almost no marketing, this animated adaptation of Among Us is surprisingly well made. Its visual style faithfully recreates the look of the game while expanding its worldbuilding in meaningful ways. The darkly comedic story is both mischievous and satirical, making it an ideal companion piece for fans of the original game.
