    New Apps Worth Noticing

    While SSPAI has long been dedicated to discovering and introducing high-quality apps across platforms, there are still many excellent apps—whether in design, functionality, interaction, or overall experience—that we haven’t yet covered. Some may be long-standing apps, others newly released. We’ll introduce them to you here.

    RecordMaster: A Recorder Can Be Colorful Too

    @Peggy_: In the SSPAI homepage feature Deep Dive | What Exactly Is Material 3 Expressive? Using Android 16 Stable as an Example, editor Clyde offered readers a detailed explanation of the M3E design language, its evolution, and its strengths and weaknesses. Compared with large companies, independent developers are often able to respond more quickly to the latest design guidelines, giving rise to many new apps. RecordMaster, the app introduced today, is one such product born from this context.

    Starting with the basics, RecordMaster is a voice recorder app built around the newer M3E design language. When you open the app, the main interface features just a simple add button. Tap it to enter the recording screen, then tap “Record” to start recording. During recording, the interface displays a waveform that changes with the audio volume. The animation is smooth, and the rich use of color makes the recording process feel far less monotonous.

    Like many recorder apps, RecordMaster allows you to pause and resume recording at any time. Once you stop, the app shows the exact storage path of the current recording, making it easy to organize later. By default, recordings are sorted by recording time and displayed sequentially on the main screen.

    As your collection grows, RecordMaster also supports organizing recordings by folders, making it easier to manage different types of audio files. Of course, since all recordings are stored locally, RecordMaster currently does not support speech-to-text conversion, nor does it offer instant syncing of recorded audio. For users who prioritize data privacy, however, this fully local storage approach can actually be an advantage.

    Eney: A Local Intelligent Companion for macOS

    @ElijahLee: Eney is an AI-driven Mac assistant developed by MacPaw. Positioned as a local-first intelligent companion, it allows users to use natural language to have it carry out a wide range of tasks—rather than merely offering suggestions or answering questions.

    After installing Eney, you must grant it Full Disk Access for it to function properly. During the initial setup, Eney downloads AI models that power its various skills. Once installed, a small round bubble with two eyes appears in the lower-left corner of the screen—cute and unmistakable, this is your AI companion. You can summon it by clicking the icon or by double-tapping the Option key.

    Eney’s core selling point is completing tasks on macOS through natural language. You can speak to it as you would to a person, telling it what you want to do, and it will carry out the operation automatically—such as scheduling meetings, writing emails, searching files, or editing videos. For these tasks, Eney doesn’t just provide instructions; it actually performs them.

    At present, however, Eney’s “intelligent companion” role isn’t quite that intelligent. In my brief testing, using natural language to “add a meeting in the macOS Calendar app” failed—it couldn’t even open macOS apps. This may be related to system permissions, but oddly enough, entering “find yesterday / today / tomorrow” does allow Eney to retrieve the corresponding calendar events and open Calendar. When it comes to launching apps, you must type the app’s name directly; using natural language like “open xx app” results in an error instead. Eney also can’t check the weather. In conversational scenarios, the model frequently hallucinates—for example, describing Heated Rivalry as a book about technology and business competition. All in all, at this stage, Eney doesn’t seem dramatically different from Siri in terms of results 😓.

    Eney places strong emphasis on local-first processing and privacy protection. Its models are sourced from HuggingFace, downloaded during setup, and run locally, enabling many tasks even while offline. The downside is that model size and capabilities are limited: it can handle unit conversions, invoke CleanMyMac to clean disk space, retrieve system status, perform local searches, compress images, and so on—but the results may not always be satisfying. User data isn’t uploaded to the cloud arbitrarily; only for more complex tasks (such as long-form summaries) will cloud processing be used, and only with your consent.

    Eney is currently in beta, with features under active development. The app runs only on Macs with Apple silicon and is included as part of the Setapp subscription—only Setapp members can install and use it.

    AirShare: A Cross-Platform Tool for Fast File Sharing

    @化学心情下2: In an ideal world, sending files should work just like Apple’s AirDrop—select the device you want to send to, wait for confirmation, and the transfer is done, without any complicated pairing or setup. Unfortunately, tools this seamless are still largely “Apple-only” at the moment (even though Google has achieved partial AirDrop compatibility with the Pixel 10). So when you need a similar experience across platforms, third-party tools become the only option.

    AirShare is one such file transfer tool. It supports Windows, Linux, and macOS (mobile operating systems are not supported for now), making it well suited for quickly sharing files within small teams—as long as all devices are on the same local network.

    When it comes to sending files, AirShare supports transferring single or multiple files, as well as entire folders over a local network. On the receiving end, when a sender initiates a transfer, you’ll see a notification in the system notification area showing who sent the files, their total size, and what files are included. Once you click Accept, the files are automatically saved to the default Downloads folder.

    Within the AirShare app itself, you can also view a dedicated receive dialog that displays the sender’s device, the file list, file sizes, and total transfer size. From there, you can choose to reject, accept, or view more detailed information about the files.

    AirShare offers both a free version and a Pro version. The free version supports local network transfers only, with a file size limit of 200 MB and a transfer history retained for seven days. The Pro version removes size limits and allows file transfers over the internet. You can download the client from AirShare’s official website, with support for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

    App Updates You Shouldn’t Miss

    Beyond brand-new apps, many familiar faces on the App Store are constantly iterating, adding more interesting and practical features. At sspai, we aim to help you filter the app updates worth paying attention to, so you can quickly catch up on what’s new from apps and their developers.

    Darkroom 7.0: A New Engine and New Lighting Tools

    • Platform: iOS / iPadOS / macOS

    @Snow: Darkroom, a cross-platform photo editing app available on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, rolled out its major 7.0 update last week. The new version adopts an entirely new rendering engine, which the developers say significantly improves smoothness and stability during editing. Two new lighting tools have also been added, opening up new creative and expressive possibilities for your photos.

    Within the editing tools, you’ll now find two brand-new adjustment sliders—Bloom and Halation—under the Tone section. These additions help fill a long-standing gap in Darkroom’s simulation of vintage lighting effects. Bloom is similar to the popular “black mist” filters of recent years, simulating light diffusion beyond natural boundaries to create a soft, dreamy atmosphere. Halation, on the other hand, mimics a classic film photography effect, where the edges of bright areas bleed a subtle red-orange glow into darker regions. This tool brings a warm, cinematic feel to strong light sources and high-contrast images.     As a long-time Darkroom user, I have to say that smoothness and stability have always been its most persistent pain points. In older versions, entering or exiting the edit view, zooming images, or working with RAW files would occasionally result in stutters or crashes. The most frustrating issue was when the entire editing preview would intermittently fail—adjustments produced no visual feedback at all, leaving force-quitting the app as the only solution.

    After the update, image stability has improved noticeably. Over the past few days, I haven’t encountered crashes or complete preview failures. That said, during zoom operations, version 7.0 still suffers from intermittent preview loss and missing animations. As for perceived smoothness, things feel a bit more “mysterious.” Beyond the new rendering engine, the app has also tweaked the interaction logic when entering the edit view from the library. In the new version, you can swipe left or right to switch between images, swipe down to return to the library, and swipe up to enable editing tools. However, before enabling the editing tools, you can’t zoom with one- or two-finger gestures or tap to compare edits. Once the tools are disabled, gestures and taps work again. This design may indirectly improve perceived smoothness, but the inconsistent interaction logic hardly feels like a true optimization—at least to me.

    One improvement that does deserve praise is that version 7.0 removes zoom restrictions in the editing view. You can now zoom all the way in to pixel level to check fine details, zoom out beyond “fit to view” to evaluate the overall composition, or use the Zoom option in the extended menu to quickly switch between preset ratios. The new version also supports adjusting the canvas background color, allowing you to use neutral tones to better judge color and contrast.

    Version 7.0 also brings a number of upgrades to video editing. It adds support for slow motion, Apple ProRes, and 8K video, with improved loading efficiency compared to previous versions, and most adjustment tools can be reused. A new draggable timeline with timecode has been added for video clips, supporting frame-by-frame positioning as well as fast forward and rewind. A real-time histogram is also available, making it easier to fine-tune visuals with precision. Unfortunately, the stability gains seen in photo editing don’t fully carry over here. Video clips may load to a black screen or briefly go black when switching between portrait and landscape; the histogram overlay can disappear intermittently; certain adjustments—such as distortion correction—can cause preview glitches; and there are even inexplicable auto-play issues. In short, video editing still falls well short of being reliably usable.

    Overall, the two new lighting tools introduced in Darkroom 7.0 are genuinely useful, and image editing stability and smoothness have improved. However, the slight changes in interaction logic may take some getting used to for long-time users. While video editing has seen major feature upgrades, its stability issues mean it’s still not recommended as a primary tool.     Paste: A Brand-New Power Search with Keyword Prediction, Smart Filters, and Image Search

    @Vanilla: Paste can be considered one of the most long-standing clipboard managers on macOS. Its biggest strength lies in its UI and interactions, which feel almost like a native app and deliver an excellent user experience. Of course, as Apple has introduced system-level clipboard features of its own, it has become harder for Paste to rely solely on a “system-like” experience to convince users to pay for a subscription to a similar tool. As a result, Paste has continually tried to add features not available in the system clipboard, such as Pinboard, sharing, and previews—but for someone as frugal as me, that still wasn’t quite persuasive enough. Recently, Paste introduced Power Search, comprehensively upgrading clipboard search across three dimensions: keyword prediction, smart filtering, and image search. In terms of functionality, it can be said to fully surpass the system clipboard.

    First, Power Search adds keyword prediction. When we type Chinese characters or letters into the search box, Paste performs real-time predictive matching based on the input. It also applies intelligent error correction to the keywords: if no results exactly match what you typed, Paste will still try to surface similar matches.

    Second, Power Search supports smart filtering. We can directly enter parameters in the search box—such as file type, app name, date, or device—or click the filter button on the right side of the input field to select them. By using these filters alone or in combination with keywords, we can conduct precise searches and more quickly locate the clipboard history we’re looking for.

    Finally, Power Search supports image recognition. When we copy photos, screenshots, or documents, Paste can recognize the text within them, allowing us to search using keywords and even highlight matched text in the preview view. However, in my own testing, I was unable to reproduce this feature when searching Chinese or English text in photos and screenshots, despite what was mentioned in the official update. I can’t be sure whether this is a bug or just an isolated issue on my end.

    After this update, I believe Paste offers plenty of motivation for heavy Mac users—such as writers, designers, developers, students, and researchers—to give this clipboard enhancement tool a try. It not only manages clipboard content effectively, but more importantly enables fast and precise searching through that content.

    Paste can be downloaded from the App Store and requires a subscription to use. Pricing is 28 RMB per month or 168 RMB per year; the family plan costs 398 RMB per year; and a one-time lifetime purchase is 598 RMB, covering both Mac and iOS clients. You can also purchase team plans based on seats, or access Paste for Mac and Paste for iOS through a Setapp subscription.

    Xiaoxing Accounting 4.0: Fully Adapting to Material 3

    @大大大K: The Android expense-tracking app Xiaoxing Accounting rolled out its 4.0 Beta major update last Sunday. The biggest change in this release is its long-awaited full adaptation to Material 3.

    Upon entering the main interface, you’ll notice the new UI feels more “standardized.” The previously immersive homepage data display has been replaced with a card-based layout; search is now pinned to the top as a search bar; and the quick-access entry at the bottom of the screen has been expanded to include templates, a calendar, expense reimbursement management, and more.

    As for core expense-tracking features, the overall layout hasn’t changed much, and the original interaction logic still applies. The most notable improvement is the numeric keypad. In earlier versions, tapping the calculation button would pop up a separate calculator keypad, which felt somewhat disjointed. In the new version, the calculation button appears directly within the existing numeric keypad and is accompanied by a scaling animation, making the recording flow noticeably smoother.

    The settings interface has also been reworked in Xiaoxing Accounting 4.0. In previous versions, all settings were listed at the top level and divided by tags. While this made items quicker to find, the accumulation of options often felt cluttered. Version 4.0 organizes settings into categories such as ledgers, display, recording settings, and reports, and many options have been reassigned within the hierarchy. Since settings are typically accessed infrequently, this categorized structure is much clearer from a usability standpoint.

    For more detailed changes, you can refer to the update log. It’s worth noting that this release is still a Beta version, and there are some minor bugs related to data calculations and UI display. If your current version is below 3.7, it’s recommended that you first update to 3.7 and manually back up your data before trying the 4.0 update, to avoid potential data incompatibility issues.     FocusFour: When Your To-Do List Blurs Your Focus, the Four Quadrants Make Things Clearer

    @轻舟_: If you’ve followed FocusFour on SSPAI before, you may have already witnessed its journey from a co-creation project to release. Recently, FocusFour has launched a native HarmonyOS version. If most of the time your problem isn’t that you don’t know what to do, but that you don’t know what to do first, then FocusFour—built around the “Four Quadrants of Time Management”—might be worth a try.

    As a task management tool, FocusFour doesn’t try to hold everything for you. Instead, it repeatedly reminds you, in a very intuitive way, to distinguish between what is important and what is urgent. In FocusFour, tasks are no longer arranged simply by time, but placed into four quadrants. This approach is straightforward and grounded in reality, quickly making you realize that truly important things are actually quite few. Compared with endlessly ticking off completed items, this view is more about helping you make choices than about keeping records.

    The newly released HarmonyOS version of FocusFour currently focuses on local data. There’s no complicated setup and no extra learning cost, and it’s completely free. When you open the app, the first thing you do isn’t figuring out “how to use it,” but deciding “where to place this task.” The overall experience of the HarmonyOS version continues the design philosophy of the earlier co-creation release: a clean interface, natural interactions, and no attempt to trap you with features.

    If you relate to any of the following:

    • You have lots of things to do, but spend every day busy with “not-so-important” tasks
    • Important tasks are always pushed to tomorrow
    • You’ve tried many tools, but in the end only stick with a single list
    • You want a tool that helps you make judgments rather than adding more burden

    And you also happen to be using a HarmonyOS device, then FocusFour may be worth trying—especially since there aren’t many apps of this type on the HarmonyOS platform. FocusFour will continue to evolve, keeping feature parity with the iOS version, and will add capabilities such as task analysis, widgets, and notification reminders. When it comes to task management, doing a little less can sometimes be more effective.

    App Brief

    Mozilla Firefox (Windows | macOS | Linux): Updated to v146. On Windows 10 devices, users can enable the browser backup feature, which backs up browser data such as passwords and bookmarks to the local device on a daily basis. On macOS, an independent GPU process is now enabled by default, among other changes.

    App+1|Locus GTD: Could this be the OmniFocus “Equivalent” You’ve Been Looking For?

    As a heavy addict of hoarding to-do apps, I’ve always had more than ten different task managers installed on my phone—ranging from cross-platform tools like TickTick and Todoist to Apple-ecosystem exclusives like OmniFocus 4 and Things 3. Every time I discover a new to-do app, I download it immediately, try it out, and sometimes even buy it on the spot. And with the rise of AI vibe coding, the App Store has seen an explosion of new indie to-do apps, most of which are hastily made and nowhere near usable.

    So after all the switching, circling, and experimenting, the only app I’ve managed to stick with has been OmniFocus—until I came across an app called Locus GTD.

    Locus updates frequently, but there still aren’t many reviews.

    When I first found it, I searched Xiaohongshu to see if existing users had shared any experiences. To my disappointment, I couldn’t find a single post about it. Back in the App Store, I realized it had only recently launched, and the developer hadn’t promoted it anywhere. Riding the wave of excitement, I made a post myself. Just like I said in that post: I finally found an app that can genuinely “replace” the OmniFocus I both love and hate.

    I even posted about it on Xiaohongshu when I first started using it—I wonder if that brought the app any new users.

    Can it really replace OmniFocus?

    Before sharing my thoughts on Locus, I want to first explain why I’ve stuck with OmniFocus for so many years:

    • A complete GTD workflow. Among mainstream productivity apps, OmniFocus is probably the only one that fully adheres to the GTD collect–process–review flow without adding unnecessary extras (such as habit tracking or Eisenhower quadrants).
    • Unlimited task hierarchy. Because of my work, I deal with all kinds of complex tasks. The ability to nest tasks infinitely is absolutely essential to me—and it’s the primary reason I never chose Things 3 for long-term use.
    • Perspectives. This is OmniFocus’s killer feature, ensuring that I always know which tasks require my attention at any given moment, with maximum efficiency.

    But with the update to OmniFocus 4, my dissatisfaction has only grown.

    First, the interaction design: to this day, I still haven’t adapted to its page-switching logic. And with the adaptation to Apple’s Liquid Glass design, the strange interactions combined with frequent stutters have made using the app feel nothing short of disastrous.

    Second, syncing: after Jianguoyun WebDAV stopped working years ago, I switched back to the official sync service. Anyone who has used it knows how unreliable it is in mainland China. Sure, I keep a VPN on constantly, but it still feels uncomfortable relying on such a fragile system.

    My love–hate relationship with OmniFocus is precisely why I was so excited when I discovered Locus GTD—it practically fulfills all my needs:

    • A complete (and in some ways better) collect–process–execute–review workflow
    • Unlimited nested projects and tasks
    • Custom filters (Perspectives)

    At the same time, Locus GTD solves two major pain points: it is built entirely on iOS native interaction design, and it supports iCloud sync!

    Over the past few months of using it, I’ve sent the developer many emails with bug reports and feature suggestions. I also learned that they currently have no plans to promote the app on any platform. So I volunteered—after receiving their permission—to write this article for 少数派 and share my experience. After all, most of the tips and expertise I’ve gained for similar apps came from here, and I want to return the favor by sharing my own findings.

    I’m not a professional writer, nor am I a GTD theorist, and I don’t intend to write a “tutorial.” First, Locus’s overall product logic is very similar to OmniFocus, Things 3, and others. Second, my goal is simply to highlight the details and interactions that impressed me during actual use. If you want to understand the full workflow of the app, I encourage you to download and try it yourself. My biggest selfish hope is that more people join me in pushing the developer to keep building new features.

    A Thoughtful Inbox Processing and Project Review Flow

    According to GTD principles, the countless thoughts squeezed into our minds quietly drain our energy and attention. That’s why GTD encourages us to record everything—no matter how big or small—into an “inbox,” clearing our minds so we can focus on the task at hand, and then return later to process whatever has accumulated.

    GTD also requires regular “review” of ongoing projects, updating their status and pushing them forward until completion.

    Locus GTD is the only app I’ve used that truly treats these two GTD rituals as core user experiences and weaves them deeply into product design. Take “processing the inbox” as an example: in most apps, the workflow is dry and mechanical—you scroll through a long list, tap dates, choose tags, assign projects. Locus, however, offers perhaps the most elegant “inbox clearing” experience on iOS. It turns inbox processing into an immersive “card game”: the screen shows only one task card at a time, forcing you to truly confront the item in front of you. What is this? Does it need to be done now? What information should I add?

    You process your inbox task-by-task through intuitive “card swiping.”

    Once a task is processed, you move on to the next card. Instead of feeling like I’m sorting things just for the sake of sorting, I actually enjoy the sense of clearing my inbox. The entire flow is smooth and gratifying. It dramatically reduces the problem of my inbox piling up endlessly, and it helps me escape the helplessness and avoidance that often arise when facing a mountain of unprocessed tasks.

    A similar interaction is used for the project review flow as well. I won’t repeat the details here—you can experience it yourself.

    Unlimited Hierarchical Structure

    Every time I get fed up with OmniFocus and try switching to Things 3 for its top-tier interaction design, I end up abandoning it after a few days because my projects are simply too complex. Things 3 supports, at most, a four-level hierarchy—Project → Heading → Task → Checklist—and that’s far from enough for my workflow.

    Locus GTD, however, supports unlimited hierarchy in two dimensions: At the task level, subtasks can be nested infinitely. At the project level, the structure is Category → Folder (also infinitely nestable) → Project.

    With a drag gesture, you can rearrange tasks or adjust their hierarchy.

    Locus GTD also puts a lot of thought into the interaction for hierarchy management: long-press and drag to reorder tasks, and hold on a task for one second to convert it into a subtask. Although in terms of fine details and smoothness, it still lags behind Things 3, overall, “drag-to-create unlimited hierarchy” combined with “excellent animation and interaction” creates a satisfying balance between the power of OmniFocus and the elegance of Things 3.

    I believe this is also one of Locus’s core design philosophies: striking a balance between powerful functionality and graceful interaction.

    Custom Filters with Huge Potential

    The custom filters in Locus are essentially the same as Perspectives in OmniFocus: by combining a series of conditions, you can filter out exactly the tasks that matter most at the moment. For example, you might create a perspective called “Tasks that require a computer and take less than 30 minutes.” When you happen to be at your computer with a 30-minute window, you can open this perspective to see what you can do right now.

    Perspectives have long been one of OmniFocus’s killer features, and they were exclusive to the Mac version—you can view them on mobile but cannot create them. Locus brings this capability to the mobile side: I can create custom filters directly on my iPhone. Although the available conditions are still not as extensive as OmniFocus, given how frequently the app updates (Locus has been updated nearly twice a week so far), I believe this feature has enormous room to grow.

    Creating complex filtering rules is easy and intuitive on the phone.

    Others

    Finally, I want to mention Locus GTD’s syncing experience. Since it natively supports iCloud, we don’t need to register or log into any account, nor do we ever need to think about syncing. All data changes sync to iCloud almost instantly. For someone who has suffered for years under OmniFocus’s syncing limitations, this smoothness feels almost unreal—I often find myself opening the settings page just to double-check that sync really worked.

    The one drawback is that Locus currently only supports iPhone. The iPad and Mac versions are not yet fully usable (though you can run the iOS version on them), so iCloud sync still can’t reach its full potential. I sincerely hope the developers can release cross-platform versions soon.

    Wishlist

    Even after all the praise above, I have to admit that Locus GTD, as a relatively new app, still has plenty of room to grow. So here’s a small wishlist—hopefully the developer will see the requests of a devoted user like me.

    • A due date for projects. This is absolutely essential!
    • A data statistics feature. Since the app already supports powerful filters, adding analytics and chart visualizations shouldn’t be too difficult, right?
    • An improved UI design. I’m picky about aesthetics—while the current UI is clean, I still feel there’s room for refinement.

    Lastly

    Locus offers monthly, yearly, and lifetime subscriptions. The lifetime version, priced at ¥328, includes all future cross-platform versions (though the developer hasn’t given a timeline for their release). The subscription prices fall somewhere between mainstream to-do apps and OmniFocus. Considering the existing features and the app’s rapid update cycle, I personally think it’s well worth it—so I bought the lifetime version early on.

    If you value native iOS experiences, believe in the GTD methodology, or simply want a beautiful, smooth, and intuitive task manager, Locus GTD definitely deserves a place in your Dock. Borrowing a line from the developer behind the paywall: they hope Locus GTD will become “the last productivity tool you’ll ever need.”

    Have you ever had this experience: while browsing an English webpage or watching an American TV show, you stumble upon an unfamiliar word. You casually add it to a translation app’s favorites list, thinking, “I’ll review it later.” But in reality, that list keeps getting longer, and you almost never open it again. And when you finally remember to study, you only recall the Chinese meaning—completely forgetting the sentence where you first saw it, or even why you saved the word in the first place.

    There are countless apps today that promise to help you memorize English vocabulary. Yet very few pay attention to the struggles of learners studying other languages. Many small-language learners still rely on pen and paper to record and review words. I know many hardworking students who not only study English for school, but also learn Japanese because they love anime, or Korean to follow their favorite idols more closely.

    For multilingual learners like these, a simple English wordbook is far from enough.

    The Unavoidable “Abandon”

    At the same time, most vocabulary apps on the market are nothing more than “book carriers.” They hand you a preset vocabulary list—older ones might even make you start practicing from abandon—but they can’t help you manage the words you actually encounter in real life. So here’s my bold claim: if you cannot apply what you’ve learned, then every word you’ve ever copied down is destined to fade away without leaving the slightest trace in your memory.

    So I created a tool: one as elegant and intuitive as a native iOS app, yet powered by a hardcore memory algorithm. I named it NewWords.

    NewWords is not just a word notebook. It is an intelligent personal vocabulary library that integrates AI-assisted expansion with the cutting-edge FSRS memory algorithm. Next, I’ll introduce what NewWords does across the three essential steps of vocabulary learning: collecting, organizing, and studying.

    Collection: Not Just “Recording” — but “Linking”

    If AI has already solved the problems of “storing” and “organizing,” then the newly added review system powered by the FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) algorithm completely solves the problem of “memorizing.” This is also why I not only recommend this app, but have chosen it as my main learning tool.

    What is FSRS?

    Simply put, it is a more advanced, machine-learning–based spaced repetition algorithm compared to the traditional Anki (SM-2) method. Conventional algorithms assume that your forgetting curve is relatively fixed, but FSRS introduces a more complex three-variable model:

    • Memory Stability: How firmly have you memorized this word?
    • Memory Difficulty: How difficult is this word for you?
    • Retrievability: What is the probability you can recall it right now?

    What does this mean for everyday users?

    First, FSRS eliminates ineffective reviews and boosts efficiency by 20%–30%. We’ve all experienced this: a word you already know by heart still shows up every single day in your review queue. The strength of FSRS is its ability to predict precisely when you’re about to forget. For easier words, it boldly extends the review interval; for harder ones, it increases frequency.

    This means you spend less time while achieving the same or better memory outcomes.

    Second: no more “review backlog anxiety.” This is the biggest pain point for Anki users. Miss a few days, and a mountain of due cards collapses onto you. FSRS handles overdue reviews intelligently: even if you skip several days, the algorithm will smooth out the schedule based on your real memory state—rather than punishing you by dumping everything at once.

    It behaves more like a supportive personal coach, not a cold, unforgiving examiner.

    Finally, flexibility matters far more in the long run. Anyone who works out knows that progress doesn’t come from brute force, but from consistent, steady effort. FSRS’s scheduling is dynamically adaptive, and unlike many overly pushy learning tools, NewWords won’t pressure you every single day—or send a cartoon bird to guilt-trip you if you take a week off (yes, that’s you, Duolingo).

    The app’s Home / Today page shows your daily status. At the top is Training Readiness, calculated through multiple data sources such as sleep, heart rate variability, and recent workout performance. This score helps you determine whether you’re prepared for high-intensity training on that day.

    Next is the Training Load section, which compares your short-term and long-term training volume to calculate your training load ratio. Based on the interval your ratio falls into, the app helps you identify whether you need a recovery period to avoid overtraining and reduce injury risks. A ratio between 0.8–1.3 is optimal; higher values enter high-intensity or even danger zones, while lower values indicate detraining.

    Wellbeing displays key bodily indicators pulled from the Health app, including heart rate, HRV, wrist temperature, blood oxygen levels, and more. Finally, the Sleep section offers a simple breakdown of total sleep duration, restorative sleep time, and other essential charts.

    The Progress page visualizes your past four weeks of training trends and load changes with a unique circular dot chart — giving you an intuitive overview at a glance. You can also filter for more metrics such as training load, duration, distance, and more. Intensity Distribution then focuses on aerobic intensity and heart rate zones, using clear bar charts to show the distribution of high, moderate, and low aerobic workouts. Whether you’re training for fat loss or muscle gain, these distributions help you plan future exercise intensity.

    The Workouts page provides both an overall summary and detailed analysis of your training sessions, integrating heart rate, pace/power, load, and recovery to help optimize training plans. Overview charts display weekly/monthly/yearly trends for workout count, total duration, distance, and energy expenditure. A filter button allows you to view specific sports independently. The workout history section provides detailed analysis for each session, including aerobic distribution, heart rate, segmentation, pace, and other sport-specific metrics.

    If you run, cycle, or train regularly — and have clear goals around results, recovery, or long-term improvement — The Outsiders is absolutely worth trying. It provides more professional trend analysis and actionable advice than typical fitness apps. Though built by the same team, Gentler Streak focuses on lifestyle-friendly health habits suitable for everyday users, while The Outsiders is a training-oriented tool designed for serious athletes.

    Radiance+: Make Your Photos Look More Realistic and Bright

    @化学心情下2: When we use an iPhone to take photos or record videos, HDR mode is often enabled automatically. By presenting a high dynamic range, HDR makes images look brighter and clearer. The principle behind HDR photography is not complicated: the camera captures multiple exposures and stacks them into a single image in which both shadows and highlights retain detail. Even when the real shooting environment isn’t ideal, HDR can still produce an image filled with information and depth.

    As display technology continues to advance, people’s expectations for image quality have also moved beyond traditional HDR. Thanks to displays with higher peak brightness and more precise local dimming, Apple introduced EDR (Extended Dynamic Range), a display capability that offers even greater visual enhancement for images and videos on compatible devices.

    Unlike HDR, EDR is not a shooting or content-encoding standard — it’s a display-level capability. Instead of relying on multiple exposures, it uses system-level adjustments to brightness mapping, allowing existing SDR or HDR content to present higher localized brightness and more lifelike lighting effects on devices equipped with XDR displays. As a result, even existing HDR images can appear closer to real-world lighting when viewed in an EDR environment.

    Radiance+ is a tool designed to rebuild traditional iPhone photos into EDR images using image-processing and machine-learning techniques. It’s extremely easy to use: when you open the app, it first checks whether your device supports XDR displays. If the light ring on the right appears brighter, your device can display EDR images — and you can move on to selecting photos.

    Tap “Choose Photo” or “Choose Sample Photo,” then select the image you want to process. The app automatically enters the editing page. By default, it immediately applies processing with its preset configuration. You can hold the “Compare” button in the lower-left corner to see a before/after comparison. If you tap “Adjust” in the lower-right corner, you can fine-tune processing — adjusting areas, strength, and more.

    Once adjustments are complete, you can export the image in different formats. Radiance+ supports exporting as HEIC, JPG, and a file type optimized specifically for Xiaohongshu; it can also embed EDR information into the original photo. The default compression quality is 70%, which you can modify in export settings. Photos exported without a Pro subscription will include a watermark.

    Radiance+ also supports batch processing. The app automatically adds its processing actions to the system Shortcuts app, allowing you to combine them with other built-in actions to create more complex automated photo workflows.

    You can download Radiance+ on the App Store. The monthly subscription costs ¥20, making it convenient to subscribe only when needed.

    Whistle: Fully Offline Speech Transcription and English Translation

    @大大大K: The biggest obstacle when traveling abroad is often the language barrier. Even if we prepare our network setup in advance to ensure translation tools work properly, we can never be fully certain about the network conditions at our destination. Once the connection becomes unreliable, translation tools become useless — especially in non-English-speaking countries, where unfamiliar pronunciations can make even asking for directions difficult.

    Whistle is a fully offline speech-transcription tool that supports real-time transcription of multiple languages. It can even serve as a communication aid for people with hearing impairments. For most of us, though, I recommend keeping this app as a backup option when traveling abroad. Not only can it recognize English, but it also supports many smaller languages such as Japanese, Korean, Thai, and more, converting them directly into English for easy reading. This means that even if the network fails during a trip in a non-English region, you can still understand the general meaning of what people are saying.

    Whistle comes with three speech-transcription models of different sizes. The Quicker model transcribes the fastest but with lower accuracy, making it suitable for simple and rapid conversations. The Average model is more balanced in speed and accuracy, ideal for everyday use. The Slower model is unique — it is the slowest but also the most accurate. Because of its large size, it is not bundled with the app and must be downloaded separately from Google Play before use.

    If you need translation, you must enable it in the settings by toggling the “Translate to English automatically” option. In this mode, the app uses the Quicker model to display real-time previews — which may be inaccurate for non-English languages — but once the recording ends, the app will reprocess the audio using the model you selected. You can then view a more accurate translation in the transcription history.

    Whistle also supports importing audio files from local storage for transcription, although processing long audio files may take more time due to the limitations of offline models.

    Pixel Play: Let Your Music Playback Become More Vibrant

    @Peggy_: When I first started using smartphones, I loved hunting down music from my favorite artists, neatly organizing everything into folders, setting cover art and track info one by one, and then listening for hours on the bus between home and school using a local music player. With the rise of the streaming era, I cycled through Apple Music and Spotify before finally settling on Spotify — and ever since, I’ve lived within its colorful, jet-black interface.

    But while the market for local music players has been shrinking, and many once-familiar apps have faded away, there are still developers brave enough to dive into this thankless niche. Pixel Play is one such emerging local music player still in development. As the name suggests, it embraces platform-native aesthetics and incorporates the latest Android design language, M3E.

    What sets Pixel Play apart from other local players is its vibrant design. On launch, the home page greets you with album covers displayed in various shapes that immediately draw the eye. These covers correspond to a randomly generated daily playlist — tap “shuffle play” and your music journey begins. Each shaped album tile can also be tapped to jump directly into that album’s tracklist.

    Also featured prominently on the home page is the listening statistics section. As you continue using the app, Pixel Play compiles your listening habits and generates daily, weekly, monthly, and even yearly reports. The depth of these statistics can rival those offered by some major streaming services.

    In the playback interface, Pixel Play dynamically extracts colors from the currently playing album cover to theme the UI. You can adjust the queue or tap the heart icon to favorite the current track. Very considerately, the developer even built a lyrics feature: you can search for matching lyrics online or upload your own local lyric file. When matched correctly, Pixel Play syncs the lyrics with playback, and tapping a line of lyrics will jump to the corresponding part of the song.

    Even though Pixel Play is still in testing, its level of polish is already impressive. Seeing my favorite artists’ albums spread across the home page brought me right back to those bumpy bus rides — reminded of the pure, unfiltered joy that music brought me before algorithms took over.

    App Updates You Shouldn’t Miss

    Beyond brand-new apps, many familiar names in the App Store continue to iterate and evolve, adding new, interesting, and useful features.     Reader Public Beta #13 Update: Improved iPad Support and More AI Features

    @Vanilla: Reader is a reading app developed by Readwise and has been featured many times on SSPAI. As one of the earliest reading tools to fully embrace AI, Reader has deeply integrated large language models such as ChatGPT into its architecture and feature designs. The newly released Public Beta #13 brings major updates, including improvements to the iPad reading experience and several new AI-powered utilities.

    First, let’s look at the updates for Reader on iPad. As one of the best devices for reading long-form content, the iPad has received a number of meaningful improvements. In landscape mode, a dual-column layout is — in my opinion — the most efficient viewing option, making full use of the iPad’s width. Reader finally supports this in the latest update. Although still in beta, it already works quite well. Whether viewing clipped web articles or EPUB ebooks, you can enable “Horizontal pagination (Beta)” in the appearance settings.

    The redesigned sidebar is also much more useful. In landscape mode, you can keep the sidebar open at all times, allowing you to jump between sections instantly — a huge efficiency boost for readers who frequently reference different parts of a document. Additionally, Reader now includes native Apple Pencil support, enabling you to highlight text and swipe pages directly on the iPad client.

    Next, let’s look at Reader’s AI enhancements. The web version now supports the full GhostReader experience, allowing you to chat with a large language model inside any document and quickly obtain answers. Notably, GhostReader v3 on the web also supports rapid prompt access, custom prompts, and clickable citations in AI responses that take you back to the referenced section of the original text.

    While Reader has long supported importing podcast episodes, the new version adds a transcript-conversion feature. You can import a podcast via the share sheet or by copying the link, and Reader will attempt to convert the episode into text for easier reference. However, in my testing, the transcription accuracy was not particularly high, and punctuation was completely missing, which made readability quite poor. This beta feature clearly needs more work.

    My favorite new feature in this update is the custom theme summarization tool. You can create themes in the settings, configure highlight counts, frequency, timing, and more, and Reader will then push curated highlight bundles that match your chosen theme — a perfect “review and recall” workflow.

    Reader also now supports two new third-party integrations. One is Zapier, which allows automations based on predefined triggers. The other is a ChatGPT browser plugin that lets you save text from ChatGPT conversations into Reader with one click.

    Additionally, Reader has rewritten its offline functionality. Improvements include faster document downloads, a new “Offline Documents” management panel, and modified default download settings. Most documents will retain text only when offline, while EPUB files preserve both text and images.

    You can download Reader for free from the official website or the App Store, but a subscription is required for full functionality. Pricing is USD 12.99 per month or USD 119.88 per year, covering all features of both Readwise and Reader.

    ColorfulClouds Weather Update: Warning Map Added, AQI Reporting More Detailed

    @Snow: While many weather apps compete fiercely on design and interaction polish, ColorfulClouds Weather maintains its own steady update rhythm — leaving “liquid glass” aesthetics and other trendy features aside, focusing instead on making weather forecasting stronger and more accurate.

    Last week’s 7.48.0 update introduced a new warning map feature. From the “More” button on the map page, you can open the warning map to view weather alerts for any chosen location and its surroundings. This significantly expands the coverage compared to the old “nearby warnings.” If you’re planning a trip, you can use the warning map to quickly check for potential weather risks along your route and adjust your plans accordingly.

    In addition to the warning map, ColorfulClouds also added an AQI station map. Turn on the toggle in the air quality map page, and you’ll see real-time air-quality data from monitoring stations nearby, along with historical data and future forecasts. Compared to regional averages, real-time readings from local monitoring stations are clearly more meaningful. If unexpected pollution occurs in a specific area, the AQI map can alert you much more quickly.

    Several weeks ago, ColorfulClouds also extended AQI forecasting to 15 days and exposed concentration data for six major pollutants: PM2.5, PM10, O₃, NO₂, SO₂, and CO. If you’re sensitive to any particular pollutant, these readings can help you plan protective measures accordingly.

    Version 7.44.0 also introduced improvements to operational efficiency. The app now supports jumping directly to specific data views via Spotlight search or Shortcuts. ColorfulClouds currently allows quick navigation to the home page, air-quality layer, typhoon details, hourly forecast, 40-day extended forecast, and 3-hour precipitation layer. You can use this to build more efficient lookup routines or automation workflows.

    GO Club: Supporting a Healthier Life, Starting With Walking and Hydration

    @Vanilla: Over the past year, I’ve personally experienced the benefits of taking a walk after meals—who would have thought that maintaining a low-intensity routine of just 40 minutes a day could produce such noticeable results? GO Club is a minimalist-style health and fitness app whose core features are step tracking and water-intake logging, enhanced by modern AI technology to assist with exercise planning. Naturally, I was intrigued, hoping it could help me further optimize my good habit of post-meal walking. It’s also worth noting that despite being newly launched, GO Club has already been shortlisted for this year’s App Store Awards.

    The first time you open GO Club, the app walks you through setting up your fitness goals: primary objective, duration, weight-loss target, current activity level, weekly frequency, and daily step goals. After granting permission to sync with Apple Health, you’re taken to the main interface.

    GO Club’s latest version supports the Liquid Glass design. The bottom navigation bar contains three tabs: Steps, Plan, and Profile. In the Steps tab, the app displays your walking data—steps, distance, calories, and flights climbed—with day, week, and month views. Tapping any bar in the chart reveals the detailed data for that period, and the upper-left corner updates to show days that met your goal, overall completion rate, daily target, and comparisons.

    In the upper-right corner of the Steps tab is a water-cup icon—tap it to enter the hydration tracker. Here, you can set your daily water-intake goal, add water-intake logs, review your history, and monitor your current progress in real time.

    In the Plan tab, GO Club creates walking plans based on your goals, activity history, and local factors such as GO Clubld Hour. It generates a weekly schedule with daily targets for distance, duration, and step count, guiding you step-by-step toward your long-term health goals.

    In the Profile tab, you can adjust your daily step and hydration targets, as well as customize elements such as Focus Mode appearance, shoe icons, and cup designs to better personalize your experience.

    GO Club is a beautifully designed fitness app available for free on the App Store. If—like me—you hope to use walking as a sustainable long-term approach to better health, you might consider the GP Plus subscription, which unlocks advanced features such as AI-generated plans, Home Screen widgets, and Focus Mode.

    Picmal: One-Click Media Format Conversion

    Beyond format conversion, Picmal also supports compression for media files. You can adjust the quality of an image or change the resolution of a video. The app applies default presets for images, audio, or video during compression, and, of course, batch compression is supported as well.

    If you need more fine-grained control over compression quality (the default for audio and video is 85%), you can manually adjust parameters in the settings menu. For images, switch the “Compression quality setting” to “Customize” to individually configure compression levels for different formats.     Scanve: Tap-to-Search for Effortless Vocabulary Learning

Similar to CapWords, Scanve aims to make English vocabulary learning more casual and accessible in everyday life.

    Scanve’s core functionality can be summed up simply: take a photo, tap to select, let the app recognize the object, and then translate it. Users can save translated items afterward. When you first launch the app, its onboarding screens clearly explain its main features, and you’ll need to grant camera and other necessary permissions. From the main interface, you can switch the target translation language. According to the developers, the app currently supports high-accuracy translation for more than 30 languages, which means its use cases go far beyond just Chinese–English translation.

    Using it is straightforward—point your phone at the object you want to identify, select it with the on-screen selection box, then tap the shutter. The app analyzes the object and instantly generates a recognition result, providing translations in the two selected languages and even pronouncing the word in the target language. If the object has an irregular shape, you can freely adjust the selection box to improve recognition accuracy.

    After recognition, Scanve allows you to save the item and generate a vocabulary list. For words in your list, Scanve further creates flashcards to strengthen memory. As your vocabulary grows, the built-in matching mode can be used as a mini-game for word and position-matching practice.

    In terms of visual polish, Scanve still lags behind CapWords; however, as a utility-focused app, it integrates recognition, saving, memorization, and practice as effectively as possible—definitely helpful for vocabulary learning. Another app in the same category, KaChiKa JA, further extends this learning chain from words to full sentences, making it an even better option for learners focused specifically on Japanese.

    HarmonyOS StarRiver Connect: Seamless Sharing With Apple Devices — Even Live Photos Work Without Being on the Same Wi-Fi

    @侧脸君: Following Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo, Huawei has now introduced cross-device file sharing between HarmonyOS 6 and Apple devices. Huawei devices must be updated to HarmonyOS 6 (build suffix 112 or above), while Apple devices need to install the HarmonyOS StarRiver Connect app.

    After enabling Huawei Share on the HarmonyOS device and switching it to “Visible to all”, you can open StarRiver Connect on the iOS device, and the Huawei device will appear directly in the share sheet. You can also add the app shortcut to Control Center and move StarRiver Connect to the front of the system share options to make file transfers easily accessible from any screen.

    In actual use, two things stood out as particularly impressive. First, the app has no network requirement — file transfers work even when the two devices are not on the same Wi-Fi network. When you select a file and choose a target device, a prompt appears asking whether to “allow the device to join the local network.” After confirming, the file transfer proceeds normally.

    Second, Live Photos can be shared across platforms. Live Photos taken on Huawei devices retain full motion playback when sent to iOS, and you can edit them, change their key photo, or export them as videos just like native iOS Live Photos. However, in testing, Live Photos taken on iOS only appeared as static images on HarmonyOS, so it’s unclear whether this is a limitation or just an isolated issue.

    Currently, the HarmonyOS StarRiver Connect app is not yet available for Mac. While Macs with M-series chips can download the iPad version from the App Store and even see other devices in the share list, files cannot be successfully transferred at this time. Mac users will need to wait for an official version optimized for macOS.

    Tap the “Run” button in the top-right corner to open your workout log, which includes workout duration, calories burned, route, cardio reports, heart rate, and more. FitWoody also provides written summaries and recommendations for each workout to help you fine-tune your intensity.

    In the second tab, you can set personalized fitness goals in four dimensions: distance, elevation, workout duration, and workout frequency. FitWoody calculates recommended goal values based on your past activity and your chosen time period, though manual adjustments are always available. After setting your goals, you can track your completion rate, progress, and trend charts.

    The third tab introduces the new Health Passport. In addition to your basic profile, it displays year-based statistics that summarize twelve months of fitness data through polished, insightful charts. However, I strongly recommend that users of mainland China iPhones hold off for now.     OpenAI Releases the GPT-5.1-Codex-Max Model

    On November 19, OpenAI published a blog post announcing GPT-5.1-Codex-Max, an agent-based programming model featuring major improvements in long-range reasoning, efficiency, and real-time interaction. Tests show that GPT-5.1-Codex-Max achieves 77.9% accuracy on SWE-Bench Verified, which evaluates real-world software problem-solving capabilities; 58.1% on Terminal-Bench 2.0; and a score of 2439 on the LiveCodeBench Pro coding Elo benchmark.

    One of the core upgrades in GPT-5.1-Codex-Max is a mechanism called Compaction. When approaching the context window limit, it intelligently retains crucial content while discarding minor details, enabling the model to process millions of tokens continuously without performance degradation. In internal testing, the model successfully completed complex tasks that ran for over 24 hours, including multi-step code refactoring and autonomous debugging.     Qualcomm Releases Snapdragon Control Panel

    CCTV exposes gas stations using modified pumps and cheating software to steal fuel and evade taxes

    According to a November 19 report from CCTV’s Focus Report, some gas stations have been stealing fuel by tampering with fuel pump motherboards and installing cheating software. During surprise inspections, regulators discovered that these gas stations kept two identical-looking computers—one of which contained software used to configure fuel-theft parameters. The theft ratio typically ranged from 2% to 5%. For example, when paying for 60 liters, consumers would receive at least 1.2 liters less.
    In addition, some stations were also involved in large-scale tax evasion. One station’s paper records showed a July revenue of 770,000 yuan, but an encrypted ledger found on a USB drive revealed real sales reaching 8.5 million yuan—concealing nearly 8 million yuan of revenue.
    In May this year, police cracked down on a cheating software operation known as “Leyou,” arresting individuals involved in its development, sales, and use. Over 360 sets of the software had been sold across 21 provinces and cities nationwide. Source

    Apple Music has announced Tyler, the Creator as its Artist of the Year for 2025, stating that his October 2024 release Chromakopia is his most personally expressive work to date, and it set new Apple Music records for first-day and first-week streams.     Pixel 10 now supports peer-to-peer transfer with Apple devices

    Google has announced that the Pixel 10 now supports direct peer-to-peer file transfers with iPhone, iPad, and macOS devices via Quick Share—without routing through servers and without relying on Apple’s technical support. Users simply need to enable “Everyone” visibility (limited to 10 minutes if desired) on an Apple device, after which it becomes discoverable by the Pixel. The transfer interface appears identical to a standard AirDrop request. Transfers in the opposite direction also work, as long as the Pixel is set to receive. Google emphasizes that the entire feature is independently implemented and has passed internal privacy reviews as well as penetration testing by third-party security firm NetSPI.

    HarmonyOS Galaxy Connect app launches on the App Store

    On November 21, the HarmonyOS Star River Connect app officially launched on the Apple App Store. The app currently allows Huawei devices running HarmonyOS 6.0 and iPhone/iPad to transfer contacts, photos, videos, and files between each other, and includes features such as device search, device information display, and transfer history. Huawei previously announced at the HarmonyOS 6 special event that the system would support cross-device transfer experiences with iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, so this app is also expected to expand to macOS.     Rumors worth a glance only

    • According to reports, Samsung originally planned to develop a glass-substrate micro-OLED display technology for Apple, known as G-VR, aimed at reducing production costs for the rumored Vision Air headset. Unlike costly silicon-based micro-OLED, G-VR uses a glass substrate, simplifying manufacturing and lowering costs, potentially allowing Vision Air to be positioned as a more affordable product compared to the high-end Vision Pro. However, new information suggests Apple has shelved the plan and may even ask Samsung to halt G-VR development entirely. While reports do not specify why Vision Air may be canceled, industry analysts believe Apple could be redirecting resources toward its smart glasses project. According to supply chain sources, Apple’s first smart glasses are expected to debut in 2026, although the initial version will not feature full AR display capabilities. The device will reportedly use photochromic lenses that automatically darken in bright environments to reduce glare, then return to transparent indoors—improving usability for outdoor and everyday wear scenarios. The glasses are expected to include a built-in camera for imaging or visual assistance, as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity for working alongside a phone or other devices.     @Tp:PSP 3000 IPS Display

    When it comes to PSP modding, the more mature and common modifications are replacing the shell, removing the UMD drive to install a larger battery, or even going as far as dual-joystick mods and swapping the key internals for tactile switches. But screen mods have never really stirred up much buzz. As the PSP series ages, the original screens often suffer from yellowing, and for players seeking a better visual experience, replacing the screen has become an increasingly explored direction. A few years ago, some enthusiasts developed a modding solution that allowed the PSP 1000 to be upgraded with an IPS display. However, similar IPS screen mods for the 2000 and 3000 models never appeared (one explanation is that intense market competition discouraged the person who created the solution from releasing additional versions for later models).

    That was the case until last month, when the PSP 3000 IPS screen mod finally arrived. Naturally, once it launched, I picked one up and installed it on my PSP 3000. This solution comes from the team behind “Nintendo Fans Group”, whose modding kits I’ve also used before — the Game Boy I modified earlier was done using their components.

    The modding process is very simple: first remove the seven screws on the device. One of these screws is hidden behind the anti-tamper sticker inside the battery compartment, so if yours is an original unit, you’ll need to peel the sticker off to find it. Then open the PSP’s front cover and lift the clips on both sides of the bottom function buttons. On some PSP 3000 motherboards, the leftmost clip of the function buttons can’t be lifted unless you remove the screw in the silver lanyard loop, so it’s best to double-check when taking things apart.

    Next, flip the screen upward from top to bottom. If you feel resistance, you can trace along the edges to locate and lift the clips. After flipping the screen open, carefully unlock the two ribbon cable connectors—one large and one small—on the right side, and remove the ribbon cables to detach the original display.

    After that, simply reverse the process to install the new screen. Before putting the shell back on, it’s recommended to perform a power-on test to ensure the screen lights up normally.

    Since this IPS screen uses a fully laminated design, you’ll also need to remove the PSP’s outer lens from the front panel. I personally recommend using a hair dryer on hot air mode to heat the adhesive from the inside of the shell, then apply pressure from the edges toward the center. Once the glue softens, it’s actually quite easy to remove. After that, reinstall the panel onto the device, and the modification is complete.

    This IPS screen mod offers three very noticeable improvements over the original display: brightness, full lamination, and horizontal scanlines. The original screen only has three brightness levels when running on battery, while the IPS panel offers four. Even then, the brightest setting on the original is only about as bright as the second level on the IPS display. Simply put, the IPS screen is brighter—especially when playing outdoors, where the higher brightness makes the content much easier to see.

    The addition of full lamination not only makes the screen look clearer and more transparent, with wider viewing angles, but also completely prevents dust from getting between the PSP’s inner and outer screens. When the screen is off, it also looks much deeper and darker.

    The PSP’s original display uses interlaced scanning, which inevitably leads to horizontal lines—especially noticeable during fast-paced combat scenes. In contrast, IPS screens use progressive scanning, so you won’t see those horizontal artifacts. That said, for some players who pursue a “purely original” experience, this might not necessarily be a good thing. It really comes down to personal preference.

    Since the PSP-3000’s screen doesn’t suffer from motion blur the way the PSP-1000 does, switching to an IPS panel doesn’t bring a dramatic, transformative improvement. In my view, the biggest appeal of installing an IPS screen on a 3000 model is the fun and satisfaction of “tinkering with hardware,” which gives you that extra 20% boost in overall experience. Especially considering the price—about 240 RMB—if you look around a bit, you can practically buy another PSP for that amount.

    If you happen to have a PSP-3000 on hand, and at least two of the three improvements mentioned above appeal to you, then upgrading to an IPS screen is worth considering. Otherwise, I’d suggest waiting a bit longer—there might be an even better-value modding option in the future.

    On November 17, this thing popped up in my Twitter “For You” feed—a metal case for the M4 Mac mini that instantly turns the mini into a Pro once installed. The most important part is that the video posted by the creator looked exactly like a scam: magnetic grills, thumb screws, spiral support feet… My rational brain knew perfectly well that there was no real need to put my Mac mini into something like this, but that “it looks cool and I want it” impulse kept buzzing in my ear.

    I searched the English name on JD and, unsurprisingly, it turned out to be a domestic brand. The price matched, so I placed an order on the spot.

    Before installation

    The reason I said it “felt like a scam” is that the product actually arrives already assembled. All you need to do is use the included screwdriver to open the side cover, then put the Mac mini inside. The inner corners of the frame are padded with foam, so as long as you’re careful, you shouldn’t scratch the device.

    Internal foam protection

    After installation, by default the bottom of the machine becomes the left side, and neither the bottom nor the rear is covered, so all the rear ports remain fully accessible. But to access the front ports, you need to remove the magnetic front panel first. That’s the price you pay for aesthetics—I will say, though, when the room gets darker, the Mac mini’s front indicator light shining through those circular holes actually looks pretty nice.

    Although the outer shell mimics the Mac Pro, I’m guessing the actual Mac Pro is far more refined (hopefully some enthusiastic colleague can gift me one so I can confirm). Look closely and you’ll notice plenty of rough “edges” on this case: the circular cutouts on the front panel aren’t smoothly painted when viewed up close; the top only has a decorative pattern and can’t actually be used as a handle; and although the gaps between different assembled sections are consistent, they’re still quite noticeable overall… The handful of thoughtful details include the magnetic front panel, which you can remove at any time during use, and the four corner screws on the base, which can actually be rotated to adjust the height (which is how I discovered that my desk isn’t level). Given that this isn’t a cheap little gadget costing a few dozen yuan, I do have to give its craftsmanship a negative review.

    But if you’re simply after the looks, want to stand the Mac mini upright, prefer easier access to the power button, or just happen to like the Mac Pro aesthetic, then having a device like this on your desk does look quite pleasing from a distance—as long as you can accept the “kitchen potato grater” design. So here’s a belated “sorry” to friends with trypophobia.

    @路中南: Byzoom Adjustable Dumbbell 25lbs

    Reference price: ¥497
    It’s hard to trust online shopping when it comes to dumbbells. If they don’t feel right once you start using them, returning them will cost a hefty shipping fee. The only brand I somewhat trust for buying fitness gear online is Keep (I mean, I’m not a professional after all 🤣). Keep’s solid cast-iron dumbbells tick all my boxes: the rubber-coated surface increases friction and feels safer in hand; the price is also acceptable. Throughout 2025, I gradually bought pairs of 2.5kg (ring-shaped), 5kg, 8kg, and 10kg (and that purple 10kg pair—absolutely love using them). All together, they were only around 700 yuan.

    Sounds like a lot, right? Yet even then, I still didn’t realize how good Keep actually is.

    Keep’s solid cast-iron line ends at 10kg—nothing heavier. After nearly a year of laid-back Fitness+ training, 10kg just isn’t enough for certain movements anymore, especially chest press and lower-body exercises. Later, I tried buying some cheap iron-sand/cement-filled dumbbells online, but I couldn’t stand their bulkiness and returned them almost immediately. Then, by chance, I came across this Byzoom pin-select adjustable dumbbell at Costco. The moment I saw it, it clicked—this was the dumbbell meant for me:

    • It supports 5lb incremental adjustments, which means finer control. Basically, buying one dumbbell gives you five: 5lb, 10lb, 15lb, 20lb, and 25lb. Super exciting. And no more mental math with unit conversions when following Fitness+ coaches. (These correspond to 2.2kg, 4.5kg, 6.8kg, 9kg, and 11.3kg.)
    • The dumbbell shortens as the weight decreases, avoiding the “lighter weight but same huge size” issue common with other adjustable dumbbells.
    • The 25lb upper limit is a bit higher than my current 10kg.
    • It comes with a dedicated base, and the pin-select mechanism means I can ditch three or four pairs of dumbbells, saving tons of space.

    The not-so-beautiful part: a single dumbbell costs 497 yuan, and getting a pair pushes it close to 1,000 yuan—not easy to justify. Byzoom is a brand from Taiwan, and when I checked their official site, it was listed at 3280 TWD, which converts to about 747 RMB. Wait, does that mean I’m actually getting it cheaper here? That thought finally convinced me to bite the bullet and buy one.

    I brought it home and started working out so fast I didn’t even stop to eat—and that’s when I finally realized how good Keep actually is. The build quality of the Byzoom dumbbell feels noticeably worse. For example, the edges of the cast-iron plates aren’t aligned, and one of them even has a clearly chipped corner. How did this even pass QC? The pin-select adjustment system is supposed to be their patented highlight, but it’s not comfortable to use at all: the silver part that touches your hand is actually plastic, the section fixed to the iron plates with screws is also black plastic, and worst of all, the entire adjustment mechanism isn’t smooth. It’s hard to change the weight in a single motion:

    This kind of plastic pin design doesn’t inspire much confidence—though maybe I’m supposed to convince myself to feel confident? When assembled to the full 25lb, the iron plates aren’t one solid block; there are small gaps and a bit of wobble. Doing chest presses while lying down and watching that loose stack hover above my head is… not exactly reassuring.

    Using an adjustable dumbbell also comes with practical issues. When following Fitness+, you typically use two different weights. Every time you switch, you need to place the dumbbell back on the base and adjust the weight, which is a bit tedious—especially since Fitness+ involves switching more frequently than a typical weight-training routine. Another issue is that some movements require holding the dumbbell vertically, as shown below, and adjustable dumbbells just aren’t ideal for that. Maybe I should simply buy one more heavy pair (like 25lb), or maybe I should just go to the gym? But going to the gym and working out at home with Fitness+ are completely different experiences—the latter doesn’t even require leaving the house, it starts faster, and it’s easier to stay consistent.

    @万安: TEGIC Little Dinosaur Ultra-Slim Card Power Bank

    As an iPhone 13 user, my needs for a power bank are simple: lightweight first, and just enough power to keep me taking photos freely when I’m out, until I can use a ride-hailing app to get home or back to the hotel. I previously chose a small-capacity, ultra-thin magnetic wireless power bank based on these needs, but in actual use I discovered several issues that bothered me a lot—slow charging efficiency, and heat buildup so serious it couldn’t be ignored. When taking photos, I couldn’t fully focus on framing; low-battery anxiety and overheating concerns kept pulling at my attention. Unexpectedly, this “little dinosaur” solved my pain points perfectly.

    Its advantages are very clear to me:

    • Magnetic wired design: it avoids accidental wireless charging entirely. Since it’s not MagSafe wireless charging, it won’t start charging by accident when kept in the same pocket or bag, wasting battery and generating unnecessary heat. At the same time, the magnetic attachment makes it easy to carry and store.
    • Built-in lanyard hole: no more frustration from carrying a power bank but forgetting the charging cable.
    • Aesthetics that hit the spot: the design fits my taste exactly. The moment I held it, it felt strangely familiar—almost like the LaCie external drives that used to be sold exclusively through Apple Stores years ago: simple, elegant, with a touch of industrial design. And the little dinosaur and cactus referencing the Chrome offline game are just adorable.
    The magnetic attachment and the way the cable wraps directly onto the body make carrying it incredibly convenient.

    The three smart app-controlled features hit all my needs and turned out to be far more practical than I expected:

    • Find-my-device: once connected via Bluetooth, if I can’t locate the power bank, I can simply open the app to trigger a sound alert. It takes just three seconds to find—no more digging through backpacks or drawers.
    • I/O strategy settings: I can choose “Input First” or “Output First,” perfectly preventing the issue of reversed charging direction when two Type-C devices are connected.
    • Parameter visualization: the app clearly displays detailed information like charging wattage, remaining battery, and usage status. The small screen beneath the dinosaur also allows you to display and adjust some of these app functions directly using the orange button on the right—such as battery level, comfort mode, battery optimization, sound alerts, and I/O strategy.

    Huawei Unveils the MatePad Edge 2-in-1 Tablet

    On November 19, at the “HarmonyOS Office New Product Tech Briefing,” Huawei unveiled its first HarmonyOS 2-in-1 tablet, the MatePad Edge. The product blends the interaction paradigms of laptops and tablets, letting users switch between “Tablet Mode” and “PC Mode,” with the system UI and interaction logic adapting according to the chosen mode.

    Hardware-wise, the MatePad Edge comes equipped with a 14.2-inch flexible OLED “Cloud-Clarity Soft-Light” display, with overall performance output reaching up to 28W. It ships with the HarmonyOS 6 operating system by default. The product will be officially unveiled at Huawei’s new product launch event on November 25.

    Bambu Lab Releases New H2C 3D Printer

    On November 18, Bambu Lab introduced its new 3D printer, the Bambu H2C. The H2C supports core capabilities such as seven-color single-pass printing, integrated printing of rigid parts and flexible joints, as well as multi-material unified-form printing. It comes equipped with the Vortek hotend-switching system, allowing seamless coordination with Bambu AMS (Automatic Material System), enabling a fully automated material-changing process. The printer can also store material information in the hotend to ensure each hotend is matched with the correct filament. When printing with more than seven filament colors, the system can calculate the optimal mapping combinations to minimize purge waste.

    The product supports eight-second induction heating and adopts a fully enclosed design with an adaptive air-circulation system, along with fully automatic multi-nozzle offset calibration. Inside, it features Bambu’s self-developed PMSM servo extruder motor capable of delivering up to 10 kg of extrusion force. Its proprietary servo extrusion system performs intelligent 20 kHz current and position signal sampling, actively detecting filament abrasion and clogging in real time. It also includes 65°C active chamber heating to suppress model warping and deformation, while enhancing interlayer bonding for high-performance and high-temperature filaments.

    In addition, the H2C is equipped with a 59-sensor array and a four-camera computer-vision system. These work together through Bambu’s proprietary neural algorithms to detect subtle anomalies during printing and provide real-time intelligent diagnostics. The intelligent monitoring system continuously tracks extrusion status, instantly identifying filament buildup, extrusion deviation, and extrusion failures.

    In terms of connectivity, the H2C supports cloud connection while also offering local LAN mode and physical connection operations, allowing users to control the printer, send slices, and update firmware without needing an internet connection. The developer mode also enables users to operate the printer with third-party accessories and software through MQTT.     Microsoft to Improve Windows 11 Advanced Recovery Tools

    On November 19, Microsoft announced that it will introduce several new recovery tools and features in Windows 11, aiming to help users restore their computers to a normal working state after catastrophic failures.

    The first feature is Point-in-Time Restore, which allows users to roll back the computer to the exact state of a previous moment. This feature will be enabled by default and automatically captures a snapshot every twenty-four hours. After a crash, users can directly restore via these snapshots in WinRE, with each snapshot retained for seventy-two hours. The second feature is that the WinRE recovery environment will support networking. The improved WinRE will extract network drivers from the main Windows system, initially supporting Ethernet, with WPA 2/3 Wi-Fi support coming later. The third feature is Cloud Rebuild, primarily designed for enterprises. IT administrators can configure OS installation data, and during the reinstallation process, all data can be preserved through OneDrive for Business. Source

    EA Announces It Will Not Release F1 26

    On November 19, EA announced that the racing game F1 25 will cover both the 2025 and 2026 F1 seasons, and that F1 26 will not be released as a standalone title. Instead, it will become a paid expansion pack for F1 25, introducing new cars, new regulations, new teams, new drivers, and more.

    The next mainline entry in the F1 racing simulation series will arrive in 2027. According to EA, the new title will deliver a much more refined F1 gameplay experience across handling, mechanics, and various other aspects. Source

    True Wireless Earbuds

    This article is TDS Studio’s fifteenth piece on SSPAI, and as always, it debuts across all platforms simultaneously.

    We previously hinted that we planned to publish a mid-range TWS comparison during the Double 11 period. However, right in the middle of testing, vivo and iQOO released their updated TWS models, so we added the new contenders to the lineup. That pushed our schedule back a bit — thanks for your patience.

    Our selection criteria for the five contenders this time were as follows: First, their original retail prices fall within the 300–500 RMB range — shopping-festival discounts or government subsidies are not considered. Second, the models must be popular choices within this price segment. Third, we need to have covered their experience before (though not necessarily on SSPAI; coverage of their previous generations also counts). Following the usual logic of TDS REVIEW’s wireless comparisons, we focused on six major categories: fit and comfort, controls and app experience, signal performance, battery life, overall ANC performance, and sound quality. All evaluations are based on the newest firmware available at the time of writing. We removed redundant sections related to design, packaging, and spatial audio performance — the latter being something most products in this price bracket don’t do particularly well anyway.

    Our lineup this round includes: vivo TWS 5 / iQOO TWS 5 — the latest models, with the vivo TWS 5 represented by the Hi-Fi edition. For context, iQOO’s TWS lineup used to correspond with vivo’s numbering: TWS 1 aligned with vivo’s third generation, TWS 2 aligned with vivo’s fourth. This year, both brands jumped directly to the fifth generation in sync. We have previously reviewed the iQOO TWS 2, which we introduced as a strong example of low-frequency noise reduction and wide codec support. For this round, we focus on the subtle differences between the two TWS 5 models, and where they have progressed or regressed compared with their predecessors. OPPO Enco Free4 is included because — prior to the release of the TWS 5 series — it was the unavoidable ANC benchmark in this price range. Moondrop’s Dreamback 2, meanwhile, is the essential pick when discussing sound quality in this segment. With these five models, we cover old vs. new, different strengths, and a diverse lineup.

    We also maintain long-term evaluation notes for many other models consistently sold within this price tier — including TEZO Que, vivo TWS 4, Edifier Lolli Pro 5, Beats Solo Buds, CMF Buds 2 Plus, TOZO NC20, Redmi Buds 6 Pro, Sony WF-C510, BGVP Q3, among others. These may be referenced in the comparison summary, and you’re welcome to discuss any specific questions in the comments.

    Fit

    All five earphones in this comparison use a stem-style pods design. The shells of the Enco Free4 and Dreamback 2 are noticeably fuller vertically than the AirPods Pro 2, which means they occupy more space in the concha and feel more present when worn. The three vivo/iQOO models are nearly identical in shell structure and are flatter by comparison, closer to the AirPods Pro 2. Their horizontal length isn’t significantly different from one another, so for users with larger auricles or conchas, the Enco Free4 and Dreamback 2 may feel more substantial and secure — while users with smaller ears may find the AirPods Pro 2 and vivo-series models much easier to adapt to.

    Overall, all five models use relatively conventional shell shapes and should fit most people well. If you have small ears, the vivo models are the safest choice. If your pods-style TWS earphones tend to slip out during daily wear, remember to choose the glossy version — matte finishes actually feel more slippery.

    Controls

    The TWS 2 uses a control area located toward the front of the stem, supporting pinch gestures and vertical sliding. In real-world use, it’s very difficult to trigger correctly — sliding is often misread as a playback command before your finger even moves. In the current firmware, the required pinch force is higher than that of similar implementations from Apple, Xiaomi, Baseus, and others. Another issue is the delayed feedback tone, which makes the interaction feel less responsive.

    Both TWS 5 models use a touch-sensitive area on the upper outside of the stem — a more traditional design. Feedback responsiveness has improved significantly compared with the previous generation, though there’s still a slight perceptible delay. The default volume of voice prompts isn’t very loud, though it is clear enough — just remember to increase it in the app.

    The Free4 also uses a touch area on the upper outside of the stem, with a clear groove design. The stem itself is flat, so touching or pressing it never feels awkward. Feedback is quick, and the default prompt volume is moderate yet clear — you can even change the prompt sound or adjust its loudness. Wear detection is also reasonably responsive, and even frequent on-off actions rarely lead to misdetection.

    The Dreamback 2 uses a touch area on the upper part of the stem. Out of the box, both sensitivity and recognition accuracy are excellent, and the controls feel very responsive. Thanks to a newly added physical bump in the structure, blind operation accuracy is also improved. Voice prompt clarity is good, and you won’t have trouble hearing notifications in most environments. Unfortunately, the Dreamback 2 does not include a wear-detection sensor.

    App Features

    All five products come with their own apps, and we tested them on third-party Android systems.

    The vivo earphones app and OPPO/OnePlus’s “Huanlü” app share a similar UI style with their respective system interfaces. One issue with vivo’s app is that when multiple earphones are connected, sometimes only one device’s settings can be adjusted, and even after the audio output has switched to another earphone in the background, the app may still fail to recognize the correct device. Occasionally, after a device successfully connects and its status is shown, the settings may remain unadjustable for a long time due to a bug.

    The main features worth introducing are two sound-related options. The first is DeepX Stereo Sound—though called “stereo,” it’s essentially a frequency-band adjustment based on the original audio, similar to an EQ. The different modes generally match their names in terms of perceived sound, and they’re worth trying.

    The second is Personalized Hearing Compensation, which seems to tailor audio output based on the user’s hearing condition. There are three default presets, designed according to age groups—presumably because hearing degradation patterns vary across ages. But to be honest, judging from the quality of the sample audio, the perceived compensation is minimal. As for the custom compensation option, it determines whether certain frequency bands need boosting by testing your ability to recognize subtle tones. Still, with the sample tones provided, it feels like the compensation does almost nothing—since I can clearly hear all the test tones anyway.

    The Huanlü app allows seamless switching between sound effects when the device is connected to two sources simultaneously, which is very convenient for users who frequently switch between a phone and a computer. My only complaint about Huanlü is that the reboot and reconnection time during firmware updates can be somewhat inconsistent. As for the equalizer, the Enco Free4 supports ±6 dB adjustments across six frequency points, though it does not offer any Q-factor controls.

    As for the so-called “AI features,” the vivo Earbuds app and OPPO’s Huanlü app do not have these capabilities built in, so they still rely on OriginOS / ColorOS for support. Third-party systems cannot access these features.

    The Moondrop app interface is comparatively more minimalistic. Introduced alongside the Dreamback 2 during the launch event were Moondrop’s AI Tuning Assistant and the interactive DSP that first appeared on the Space Travel 2. You can now adjust three gain levels, three presets, and access a graphical EQ interface that supports tuning five frequency bands from +3 dB to –12 dB, along with Q-value adjustments. However, it’s important to note that DSP tuning is currently unavailable under LDAC / LHDC. Fortunately, after switching back to LDAC, all previously configured DSP settings are preserved.

    A new addition is AI Lab, also known as the Moondrop Yuki AI Tuning Assistant. It allows natural-language conversations and uses an online large model to interpret your intentions. You can tell it the subjective direction you want to adjust toward, or even ask it to emulate the sound signature of another headphone model. It will offer EQ suggestions based on its database and can even explain the subjective listening changes corresponding to those EQ settings. In our tests, asking it for simulations returned surprisingly complete and thoughtful recommendations.

    In summary, among all the companion apps, OPPO’s Huanlü is currently the most stable in day-to-day use, while Moondrop’s app offers the richest set of sound-related features.

    Noise Cancellation, Transparency, and Call Quality Overview

    Setting aside existing noise-cancellation reviews, this section focuses purely on comparison. Following the usual TDS REVIEW workflow, we tested the earbuds subjectively across several environments, including:

    1. Subway commute scenarios with loud, stable low-frequency noise and some human voices, used to judge differences between modes and low-frequency noise-reduction depth
    2. Busy café environments dominated by human voices and complex noise, used to judge noise-cancellation bandwidth
    3. Quiet library scenarios without obvious stable noise, used to evaluate noise floor and ear pressure
    4. Street-corner scenarios with complex but generally low-pressure noise and occasional sudden peaks, used to evaluate the naturalness of transparency mode
    5. Wind-noise simulation, speech scenarios, and call-simulation tests

    Noise-Cancellation Depth

    In terms of overall perceived noise reduction, all five earbuds are very usable in common daily environments such as public buses, subways, subway stations, and shopping malls. With deep ANC enabled and without choosing specific scenario-based modes, the strongest low-frequency performance comes from the sibling duo: iQOO TWS 5 and vivo TWS 5 Hi-Fi Edition. They most noticeably suppress stable low-frequency noise, approaching the level of AirPods Pro 2.

    Next is the iQOO TWS 2. Its perceived low-frequency depth is close to the first two, but its mid-low-frequency attenuation is slightly weaker. When we previously recommended it, its peak low-frequency ANC performance was a major reason. Following that is the OPPO Enco Free4. Its overall low-frequency ANC depth is not as aggressive as the three vivo-system models.
    Lastly, the Moondrop Space Travel 2 shows a more balanced ANC depth overall, though its low-frequency and mid-low-frequency transitions are not as pronounced as the others.

    Noise-Cancellation Bandwidth & Mid-Frequency Performance

    All five earbuds demonstrate clear improvement in ANC bandwidth, and all can cover the main vocal frequency range to a significant extent—though generally still slightly behind the AirPods Pro 2.

    After direct comparisons, we believe the best bandwidth coverage and mid-frequency attenuation still come from the vivo/iQOO TWS 5 models. Next are the Moondrop Space Travel 2 and OPPO Enco Free4. The iQOO TWS 2 ranks last.

    The two TWS 5 models perform well in both bandwidth extension and mid-frequency attenuation. The Enco Free4 has bandwidth coverage similar to the Space Travel 2, but its mid-frequency noise-reduction perception is stronger, reducing more vocal energy. The iQOO TWS 2, being a previous-generation product, already lagged behind the Free4 in mid-frequency depth during earlier evaluations, and within these five models it remains the weakest performer in this category.

    Ear Pressure Control

    In terms of actual ear pressure experience, the lightest is the Shuiyueyu Dreamback 2, which uses feedforward noise cancellation and has a moderate depth of noise cancellation, resulting in almost no noticeable ear pressure and allowing for longer, more comfortable listening. The next in line is the iQOO TWS 2, which, in its initial firmware, already had minimal ear pressure, and the current firmware has improved this further. The OPPO Enco Free4 and iQOO TWS 5 have a moderate ear pressure feel, which is more noticeable compared to the first two. For first-time noise-cancelling headphone users, this might be more perceptible. The worst ear pressure control is on the vivo TWS 5 Hi-Fi version, which may be due to it being a new product, and there is still significant room for improvement in its ear pressure management.

    Wind Noise Suppression

    In terms of wind noise suppression, all models were tested under their default noise cancellation settings without any dedicated wind noise suppression mode. The Enco Free4 performed excellently, automatically adjusting to a lower depth of noise cancellation when wind noise was detected. The effect on wind noise suppression is quite noticeable, and it quickly returns to the original noise cancellation depth once the wind disappears. The vivo TWS 5 and iQOO TWS 5 also have adaptive capabilities, but their response times are a bit slower than the Free4, and some wind noise still remains after the adjustment.

    The Dreamback 2 and iQOO TWS 2 are relatively average in wind noise suppression in their default modes, but the Dreamback 2 has a dedicated manual wind noise suppression option. When enabled, it provides the strongest wind noise reduction among these five models, although this comes at the cost of further reducing noise cancellation depth. Therefore, considering the overall noise cancellation experience and wind noise suppression, the Enco Free4 is sufficient for most scenarios, while those who want to avoid wind noise affecting their listening experience can opt for the Dreamback 2 with the wind noise suppression feature activated.

    Transparency Mode / Ambient Sound

    In terms of ambient sound reproduction, the iQOO TWS 2 gives a noticeably “screened” feel, while the others are similar in terms of naturalness. Among them, the iQOO TWS 5 and Enco Free4 have a slight emphasis on high frequencies, creating a peak-like effect, while the Dreamback 2 has more emphasis on human voices. The adaptive logic of both TWS 5 models can trigger frequent adjustments, especially when the environment’s noise falls into a completely different frequency range, creating a lagging adjustment effect.

    In terms of voice clarity, the Free4 and both TWS 5 models are better, with almost no muffled feel to the speaker’s voice, while the Dreamback 2 and TWS 2 have a more noticeable muffling effect.

    Call Performance

    For calls, we tested in a mobile operator’s VoLTE environment. The best call clarity is from the Shuiyueyu Dreamback 2, followed by the OPPO Enco Free4, with the Free4’s voice slightly thinner in tone. The iQOO TWS 5’s call noise cancellation is not as effective at suppressing surrounding noise as the vivo TWS 5 Hi-Fi version, but both are comparable in performance, though the sound is more muffled. The iQOO TWS 2 has less muffling but overemphasizes low frequencies, making sibilant sounds and breath noises more pronounced.

    Overall Noise Cancellation Assessment

    Overall, all five products meet the basic standard required for daily commuting, representing a significant improvement compared with sub-¥500 models from just a few years ago. From the perspective of noise cancellation perception alone, we recommend prioritizing the two TWS 5 models and the Enco Free4. If you care more about comfortable noise cancellation, minimal ear pressure, and the least impact on sound quality, the Dreamback 2 is the better choice.

    Compared with the iQOO TWS 2, the new TWS 5 models show clear improvements: deeper mid-to-low-frequency noise reduction, better adaptive behavior, improved wind-noise handling, and largely resolved background noise issues. The Free4 provides a balanced approach, paying equal attention to wind-noise control and cancellation depth. Dreamback 2 does not achieve the same cancellation depth as the new models from major smartphone brands, but its lower ear pressure and feedforward ANC—designed to minimize distortion of the sound—make it ideal for users who prioritize comfort and audio integrity. Ultimately, your choice should depend on your own needs and usage scenarios.

    In this same price segment, the Edifier Lolli Pro 5 and TOZO NC20 also offer strong noise-cancellation depth, while the BGVP Q3 and Beats Solo Buds prioritize passive isolation—great options for users who do not need active noise cancellation but prefer the buds-style fit.

    Connectivity & Battery Life

    Signal Stability

    iQOO TWS 2:

    Equipped with Qualcomm’s second-generation S3 audio platform, the TWS 2 already has a strong foundation for reliable wireless performance, which is reflected in real-world usage. Under Snapdragon Sound + aptX Adaptive at 96 kHz, as well as LDAC in “Best Effort” mode, its connection to an Xperia 5 III remains very stable, with no disconnections and only rare stutters. However, with WLAN enabled and LDAC pushed to 990 kbps, stuttering and packet loss become quite common.

    vivo TWS 5 Hi-Fi Edition / iQOO TWS 5

    When connected to the standard test device Xperia 5 III using LDAC in “Signal Priority” or “Best Effort” mode, both models exhibit very few stutters or packet loss regardless of whether WLAN is enabled or disabled. Even at a distance of 5 meters with a load-bearing wall in between, performance remains largely stable without noticeable degradation. Only when the distance exceeds around 6.5 meters through a wall do stutters and dropouts begin to appear.

    On the same device, switching to “Sound Quality Priority” mode changes the situation slightly. In RF-dense environments, enabling LDAC Sound Quality Priority may cause occasional stutters, which become a bit more frequent when WLAN is active. When both conditions—wall obstruction and WLAN enabled—occur together, packet loss increases further. In extremely congested environments such as train stations, noticeable stuttering is expected.

    For LHDC testing, we used the LHDC One standalone transmitter—the standard testing device that supports the full LHDC-V 1 Mbps specification. With a wall and roughly 9 meters of separation, dropouts occur. Without obstruction at around 10 meters, stability is generally not an issue. For users of the Hi-Fi edition, we recommend switching to LHDC in complex wireless environments.

    OPPO Enco Free4

    As a TWS earphone that supports the LHDC-V 1 Mbps specification, the Enco Free4 was tested using the LHDC One standalone transmitter. However, just as some users previously experienced with the Enco X2, when connected to the universal LHDC transmitter, the Free4 only engages the older LHDC mode at a 48 kHz sample rate.

    Under LHDC 48 kHz and AAC, the Free4’s basic signal stability is acceptable. When connected to the Xperia 5 III, dropouts occur at around 5 meters with a wall in between. Without obstructions, stability is generally fine within a 10-meter range. As for “Fluid Bluetooth,” it is only available when paired with an OPPO smartphone.

    ShuiYueYu DreamBack 2

    When connected to the standard test device Xperia 5 III using LDAC in “Signal Priority” or “Best Effort” mode, both WLAN on and off, there is minimal stutter or packet loss. Even at a distance of 5 meters with a load-bearing wall between, the performance remains stable with no noticeable increase in stuttering. It is only after 7 meters of separation with a wall that stuttering and packet loss become apparent.

    With the same device, switching to “Sound Quality Priority” mode causes occasional stuttering in signal-dense areas when LDAC Sound Quality Priority is activated. This effect is slightly increased when WLAN is on. When both wall obstructions and WLAN are active, packet loss and stuttering increase further. In highly signal-dense environments, such as train stations, there is noticeable stuttering.

    Under LHDC 48kHz, packet loss and stuttering occur at around 8.5 meters with a wall in between. Compared to the first generation, DreamBack 2 shows a significant improvement in signal stability. In daily usage, you can reliably use LDAC or LHDC, but in signal-dense areas where your phone isn’t kept close, switching to AAC is more reliable.

    For all five of the tested earphones, after switching to AAC, the test results with both Xperia 5 III and iPhone 14 were stable, even when WLAN was on or off, ensuring smooth signal performance over considerable distances.

    Latency

    Following our latency testing process, in a traditional Bluetooth (non-LE Audio) environment, when low-latency mode is enabled, the connection to the standard test devices Xperia 5 III (LDAC, aptX series, AAC), LHDC One (LHDC), and iPhone 14 (AAC) was tested with streaming video playback. The subjective experience is as follows.

    Battery Life & Charging

    For battery life support, our standard testing procedure is as follows:
    Connect to the Xperia 5 III using LDAC in “Best Effort / Signal Priority” or AAC codec, enable ANC, disable spatial audio and low-latency mode, keep all other settings at default, set volume to 50%, and continuously play streaming music (Apple Music Lossless) and podcast programs (Xiaoyuzhou). Playback continues until one side of the earbuds fully depletes its battery.
    Each earbud undergoes at least three full test cycles to avoid anomalies caused by single-sample outliers.

    The low frequencies have a moderate amount, with slightly emphasized thickness and fullness. You can sense a mild mid-bass hump. Sub-bass extension is decent, with good elasticity. Attack and decay speed are moderate, with very minimal lingering resonance. Atmosphere is not overly colored, and smearing is minimal—just enough to set the tone. Instruments with fundamentals in the lower midrange do not lean forward excessively.

    The midrange places vocals at a slight distance, with a slightly smaller mouth shape than usual. In most tracks, you will not encounter an exaggerated “big mouth” effect, and the imaging is refined. TWS 2 presents vocals with a slightly textured, weightier quality. It handles male and female voices similarly well, though it suits thicker vocal timbres slightly better, while maintaining only a moderate amount of grain. The throat region is slightly elevated in presence, with more breathiness and some retained sibilance. Vocal transparency is good—there is no muffled coloration.

    Regarding instruments, their texture and definition do not lean strongly in any particular direction. For string instruments such as violins, violas, and guitars, body resonance is not heavily emphasized, while bowing and plucking details are a bit pronounced but not protruding unnaturally. Cellos have a solid sense of body, but still slightly thinner than standard. Electronic instruments—synths, electric guitars—can sound relatively stimulating. Brass instruments have adequate grandeur; trumpets and other bright brass exhibit slightly elevated brilliance. Woodwinds perform reasonably and without surprises. Harmonics are not the most natural, but the quantity is quite sufficient for this price range. Percussion presence is appropriate, though upper-frequency impact—especially from cymbals—can feel somewhat sharp.

    The treble region has moderate brightness overall, with detectable peaks in certain bands that add刺激感 to cymbals and similar transients, occasionally affecting long-term listening comfort. Fortunately, it stops just short of turning into “shattered glass.” Upper-treble extension is impressive for this price class, with roll-off not arriving too early, though still a bit faster than ideal.

    Soundstage size is not large but remains well-structured, with relatively equal width and depth. Vocal–instrument separation is decent, and overall coherence is maintained. Resolution is above average for its class, with a slightly emphasized “sense of detail.” Dynamics are good, and transients are responsive.

    Additional Note: Differences Between iQOO TWS 2 and vivo TWS 4 Hi-Fi Edition

    The low frequencies have a moderate amount, with some added thickness and fullness. Elasticity is decent, and sub-bass extension is good. Attack and decay speeds are moderate, retaining a light touch of resonance. The overall ambience has mild bloom and a slightly richer character. In default tuning, the TWS 5 Hi-Fi edition delivers a rather solid low end—less in quantity than the Enco Free4 and TWS 4 Hi-Fi edition, but with healthier energy distribution, while still clearly leaning toward a pop-oriented tuning. Instruments with fundamentals in the lower midrange lean forward slightly.

    In the midrange, vocals sit relatively close but not “in your face,” with a moderate mouth size and good refinement. The tuning emphasizes vocal texture more than contour definition. There isn’t a strong preference toward male or female vocals, but the earbuds tend to suit more robust, firm, and energetic vocal timbres; lighter voices may sound slightly thickened. Grain is noticeably polished, delivering decent smoothness. Timbre coloration is perceptible, leaning a bit warm. The throat region is slightly elevated, with a touch more breathiness. Details like saliva sounds are highlighted, and sibilance is mildly present. Overall vocal transparency is moderate, without artificial brightness.

    For instruments, most are also rendered with texture taking priority over definition. String instruments—violins, guitars, violas—have some thickness, sounding fuller rather than sharp or attention-grabbing. Bowing and plucking details are improved from the previous generation, but not heavily emphasized. Cellos have a moderate sense of body, slightly oversized in spatial proportion. Brass instruments offer decent grandeur, though trumpets and other bright brass lean a bit conservative. Woodwinds have acceptable air and a touch of added thickness.     The treble region overall is not very bright, though there are mildly emphasized peaks. Upper-treble extension is average, with a slightly quick—but not prematurely early—roll-off. Compared to the TWS 2, upper-band energy is more conservative across the board.

    Soundstage is moderate in size with clear boundaries, maintaining some width and depth. Combined with a reasonable sense of “height,” it forms a fairly full, flattened-sphere-like space. Separation between vocals and instruments is acceptable, and overall cohesion is good. Resolution is aligned with expectations for this price tier, slightly improved from the previous generation, with only a mild emphasis on “perceived detail.” Dynamics are good, and transients are average.

    Additional Note: Differences Between iQOO TWS 5 and vivo TWS 5 Hi-Fi Edition

    Compared with the previous generation’s noticeable differences, the TWS 5 lineup is much closer this time. The iQOO TWS 5 adds a bit of thickness in the upper midrange and lower treble, giving some instruments a more pronounced attack and adding a touch more “sweetness” to vocals. Low-frequency solidity and prominence are slightly reduced compared to the vivo model. Broadly speaking, both share a similar tuning style; the vivo Hi-Fi edition sounds a bit warmer, while the iQOO variant leans slightly more colored in the upper mids/treble—nothing drastic. In contrast to standard mode, the Hi-Fi edition’s “Master Pro” profile sounds even more neutral and balanced.

    Subjective Evaluation – OPPO Enco Free4

    The low frequencies have slightly elevated quantity, with notable thickness and fullness. Elasticity is decent, and sub-bass extension is average. Attack and decay speed are moderate, but there is a noticeable amount of lingering resonance. The ambience has little smearing yet still sounds rather rich. The default tuning of the Enco Free4 makes the low end feel a bit overwhelming in the head. The quality itself isn’t bad—there’s no mushiness—but for a lot of recent Western pop, the bass is simply too showy. Low-frequency instruments are pushed prominently forward. Instruments with fundamentals in the lower midrange lean heavily toward the front.

    In the midrange, vocals sit slightly close, with moderate mouth size and a somewhat emphasized refinement. Vocal texture is not prioritized as much as contour definition; thickness is limited, and lines are clearly drawn. There’s no strong leaning toward male or female vocals, but in general the tuning favors lighter, more delicate vocal timbres—rough, grainy, thick voices tend to lose their character here. Timbre coloration is minimal, especially in the upper midrange of the vocal fundamental, where accuracy is decent. Grain is noticeably polished, making the sound quite smooth. The throat area sits at a normal height, but breathiness is slightly more abundant. Sibilance is mildly present, and some mouth-noise details (saliva, lip sounds) can stand out. Overall vocal transparency is relatively high without artificial brightness.

    For instruments, the Enco Free4 generally balances texture and contour—except for instruments with lower fundamentals, which can sound distinctly off. In the string family, violins, violas, and guitars have an appropriate thickness, with bowing/plucking details mildly emphasized. Cellos feel physically solid, though disproportionately enlarged in the soundstage. Brass has decent power (especially under the Dynaudio tuning), and trumpets or other bright brass have sufficient sparkle. Woodwinds maintain decent timbre accuracy, but the sense of air feels unnatural—too tense and overly highlighted rather than rich. Harmonic content is insufficient and less natural. In percussion, the kick drum is over-present, snares are tightened aggressively, and cymbals skew bright with some metallic tinge.

    Treble brightness is moderate-to-slightly-bright, with both overall sparkle and discernible localized peaks—not the smoothest treble. Upper-treble extension is acceptable; even with AAC there is some retained top-end detail. Under LHDC the roll-off is less abrupt.

    The Enco Free4 creates a space that isn’t congested, offering reasonable width and depth with fairly sharp edges and low diffusion. Combined with mildly compressed height, the soundstage forms a slightly flattened, moderately sized sphere. Separation between vocals and instruments is decent—vocals don’t drown despite the strong bass. Cohesion is average. Resolution ranks upper-mid within the sub-¥500 TWS category, with some emphasis on “perceived detail.” Dynamics and transients are respectable.

    Overall, the Enco Free4 is a classic “fun tuning” with excessive bass and elevated ends on both sides of the spectrum—immediately impressive, but difficult to listen to for long. I strongly recommend reducing low-frequency gain or switching to the “Pure Vocal” preset.

    Additional Note: Differences Among Free4 Preset Tunings

    Among the three defaults in the regular (non-Dynaudio) version, “Pure Vocal” is the one I recommend—its bass quantity is the most restrained of the three. However, it also introduces problems: cymbals become more aggressive, brass instruments gain sharper metallic overtones, and vocal breathiness is more pronounced. In terms of frequency balance, though, it’s the healthiest. Compared with the regular version, the Dynaudio edition adds the “Dynaudio Signature” profile, which still retains heavy bass and adds some looseness to the texture. There’s also added room-like reverberation. Honestly, it still isn’t a particularly healthy tuning.

    Subjective Evaluation – Moondrop Dreamback 2

    Based on ANC off, LDAC codec, default “Pop” sound profile, medium gain.

    The low frequencies have moderate quantity, with neither notable thickness nor fullness. Elasticity is good, and sub-bass extension is excellent. Attack and decay lean slightly fast, with very little lingering resonance. Of the three sound modes, this one offers the strongest ambience, though smearing and richness are still relatively low. Dreamback 2’s bass has commendable layering and contributes supportive weight without drawing excessive attention. Even in the “Pop” profile—its highest bass-gain option—the energy distribution remains fairly healthy. Instruments with fundamentals in the lower midrange do not tilt forward.

    In the midrange, vocals sit relatively close with a slightly large mouth size and high refinement. Dreamback 2 balances texture and contour well; thickness is moderate, and lines are outlined with some emphasis but not excessively. There’s no strong male/female vocal bias, and it generally suits voices that aren’t too thick or grainy. Grain is lightly polished, giving overall smooth presentation. Timbre coloration is minimal, with only subtle adjustments in the upper mids—neither warm nor cold. The throat region sounds natural, breathiness is mildly highlighted, and mouth-noise details come forward a bit without harming listenability. Sibilance is only noticeable in extreme cases. Vocal transparency is quite high with a slight lift in brightness, yet the tonality remains natural.

    For instruments, most maintain a balance between texture and contour, with slight brightening in some cases. In strings—violins, guitars, violas—thickness is moderate, and bowing/plucking details are clear and sufficiently present. Cellos have realistic body and proportional size within the space. Brass has respectable power, and trumpets or other bright brass gain adequate brightness (sometimes slightly too much in certain modes). Woodwinds have good air and decent naturalness. Harmonic content is plentiful for a true wireless earphone. In percussion, the kick drum has moderate presence, snare decay is quick, and cymbals are generally bright without sharpness—metallic overtones stay controlled.

    Treble is fairly bright with notable overall energy. Smoothness is respectable, with peaks somewhat polished down. Upper-treble extension is very good for a TWS, with roll-off neither early nor abrupt.

    The soundstage is moderate in scale, with slightly sharp boundaries and respectable width and depth. Combined with a reasonable sense of height, Dreamback 2 in its Pop tuning produces a slightly flattened spherical sound field. Separation between vocals and instruments is strong for a TWS, and overall coherence is intact. Resolution is very good thanks to the excellent driver, with a mild emphasis on “perceived detail.” Dynamics and transients are solid.

    Additional Note: Differences Among Dreamback 2 Preset Tunings

    All three profiles mainly adjust bass levels. My preferred option is the default “Pop” tuning mentioned above. The “Standard” and “Monitor” profiles progressively flatten the low end. Compared with the first-generation Dreamback’s default tuning, Dreamback 2’s default brings a bit more upper-mid gain, resulting in slight added brightness.

    Sound Trends of Other Models in a Similar Price Range

    TEZO Que: A pleasing balance with good vocal texture. This tuning suits podcast listeners well and also delivers a natural impression for most pop and electronic genres, without particularly strong coloration or emphasis.

    Edifier Lolli Pro 5: A fuller, rounder sound with solid mid-bass quality and firm instrumental body. It follows a mildly V-shaped tuning.

    beats Solo Buds: Bass elasticity is good with added fullness, vocals are refined, and treble brightness is moderate. Overall energy is a bit concentrated, still fitting into a lightly V-shaped profile.

    CMF Buds 2 Plus: Prominent, highly elastic low frequencies—this is a clearly bass-focused tuning.

    TOZO NC20: Treble extension is better than CMF’s, and bass quantity is slightly more restrained. It represents a mild V-shaped, pop-oriented tuning.

    Redmi Buds 6 Pro: The stock tuning has noticeably elevated bass. It is a classic “V-shape,” though with lower technical performance than CMF.

    Sony WF-C510: A traditional Sony-style tuning for their lower-midrange dynamic models—thicker mids and bass, less treble presence, a warm tone, and overall average technicalities.

    BGVP Q3: Among all listed models, its technical performance ranks second only to Dreamback 2. As the only dual-mode wired/wireless TWS, its bass is tight and focused, vocals maintain both good listenability and some transparency, and treble smoothness is acceptable.

    Summary and Recommendations

    Overall, the five main units we selected this round all exceed the average standard. The lineup is based partly on survey data we gathered earlier on Weibo and partly on our own judgment, while doing our best to avoid exaggeration or unfair comparisons.

    The noise cancellation performance of the vivo TWS 5 and iQOO TWS 5 is excellent. The sound performance of both versions is generally fine, but it’s recommended to choose your preferred sound profile, as the default mode tends to emphasize both ends of the frequency spectrum. There are no major issues with cross-platform compatibility or signal performance. The Hi-Fi version has good support for LHDC and LDAC, making it a top choice for Android users prioritizing noise cancellation in this price range.

    The OPPO Enco Free4 also delivers solid noise cancellation performance, making it one of the most comprehensive noise-cancelling options in this price range, just below the TWS 5. However, the default sound profile emphasizes the bass quite a bit. There are some compatibility issues with LHDC on different devices, so it’s recommended for users of Oppo and OnePlus devices, or those within the OPPO ecosystem.

    The iQOO TWS 2 is technically a previous-generation product, but it’s still quite easy to find. It’s a representative of the mid-to-low-range phone brands that started to emphasize deep bass noise cancellation. Compared to the same generation vivo TWS 4 series, it has well-calibrated sound. With good support for LDAC and aptX Adaptive, it remains a solid noise cancellation option for users with Qualcomm-based SoC phones, but it’s not as highly recommended as the first two.

    Shuiyueyu Menghui 2 is the only one among these models that prioritizes sound quality. Its overall noise cancellation perception is slightly weaker compared to the others, but its noise cancellation has minimal impact on the sound quality. The sound performance is very high, and it also offers a highly flexible tuning function. It’s the only model in the sub-500 RMB price range that supports spatial audio rendering (see our TDS REVIEW of Menghui 2) and wireless charging. This model is recommended for users who prioritize sound quality, with noise cancellation as a secondary feature.

    This is our mid-range TWS comparison for the end of 2025. Compared to the previous two mid-range comparisons, the general level of the models has improved. It’s clear that after hitting a bottleneck in active noise cancellation depth, competition has shifted back to the relatively low-to-mid price market. This comparison covers fewer points than a standard TDS REVIEW, which is something we’ve been thinking about.     Alibaba’s Qianwen App Enters Public Beta

    UNISOC Launches the T9300 High-Performance 5G SoC

    On November 16, UNISOC officially listed its T9300 high-performance 5G SoC on its website.     Ministry of Public Security Flags 40 Mobile Apps for Illegal or Irregular Personal Data Collection

    On November 17, the National Cybersecurity Notification Center reported that between September 28 and October 16, 2025, the Ministry of Public Security’s Quality Supervision and Testing Center for Computer Information System Security Products detected 40 mobile applications involved in illegal or improper collection and use of personal information. The identified issues include: failure to list the purposes, methods, and scope of personal information collection and use one by one (16 apps); failure to inform users of the purpose when requesting permissions that allow access to personal information (1 app); collecting personal information before obtaining user consent (2 apps); collecting personal information beyond the scope authorized by users (16 apps); personal information protection policies describing data collection beyond what is necessary for related functions (1 app); declared permissions in configuration files exceeding the necessary scope for related functions (2 apps); actual collection of personal information beyond what is necessary for related functions (10 apps); failure to provide users with channels or features to file personal information–related complaints (5 apps); failure to provide specific ways for users to correct or supplement their personal information (3 apps); failure to provide specific ways for users to delete their personal information (3 apps); failure to provide channels or methods for users to delete their accounts (1 app); including unreasonable conditions or extra requirements in the account deletion process (1 app); failure to provide options to exit or disable personalized content display (1 app); and advertisements that mislead or deceive users (2 apps).
